Dilemma between Emerald & Zenith Zoysia
Comments (27)why don't you ever provide any sources for your statements? Because this website does not require sources in order to post. This is a site to share personal experiences and helpful information we might have picked up elsewhere. I did some checking to see what Jeff Lowenfels had to say about RoundUp. I learned a couple things. One - I had always pronounced glyphosate wrong. Secondly, Lowenfels is an organic purist who hates anything he cannot pronounce. That is very well and good, but what do you use when you want to kill one invasive grass that is heading across the mulch toward the other invasive grass? I suppose on a small scale, you could put a little elbow grease into it and pull the invader out. But I wonder what Lowenfels would suggest to kill a yard full of bermuda, zoysia, or creeping charlie in preparation for a renovation back to a different turfgrass. Also if you want to learn a lot more about RoundUp check the wikipedia page. Then check the wikipedia page for glyphosate....See Moregrowing northern catalpa from seed in florida
Comments (24)Ha ha ha ha!!! My empress trees are growing like crazy now! I cut nicks off the top of the still bald catalpas and it's green under there so who knows...I hear they don't come back until May. Here's the funny: I was telling my Mom today that my plan is to have these container trees then put vines and stuff in them; well she just sees these cut back stalks (and doesn't know what we all know know about this) so she didn't think I was going to have trees in my containers, then she didn't think the empress trees would grow here. HA! From the time I showed them to her to the time we got back from dinner they had grown. She then remarked that I could probably sit right there and watch them grow. Probably. You know what though, out of 200+ seeds, only 7 came up. Luckily. I also planted some okra seeds in there and they sprouted in 24 hours. The containers are full of that $2 a bag cow manure they sell at walmart. Maybe it's even $1 a bag, whatever. I anticipate wild growth this year! And with the empress trees in a pot I can cut them back ea year right? We are having a good spring here in FL so far....See MoreAnother round of what weed is this? And help on starting lawn from scr
Comments (2)One might be oxalis. You will want to use a broadleaf weed killer for some of those. I would focus on establishing more grass first though. For consistent success with new grass, I recommend an in-ground irrigation system. Poly pipe is probably a better choice than PVC since you are in zone 3. Also, you might need to put down more hay. I'm not familiar with KBG seeding but Bermuda requires the soil to be consistently moist for seed germination. Watering 2-3 times per day might not cut it depending on temperature....See MoreGrowing cactus from seed.... share your tips, please!
Comments (22)Wendy, lucky me in California we have access to very good quality C&S soil, with zero peat! It's ~40% pumice with Fir and Redwood "aged" bark and wood product and a little bit of sand. Since seedlings like it moist I use this as is for most applications. I add more small size pumice for plants that prefer less compost. For very tiny seeds I sprinkle a layer of sifted soil through a fine kitchen strainer so they don't fall through. Finally I sprinkle some small size pumice once the seedlings reach a reasonable size (a least equal to the size of the pumice I use). This has worked for me in my generally very dry environment. I have to be more careful over the winter or like now when the weather is more humid, most of all this season!!! Thanks to that vortex thingy, it's been wet and cool all winter here. Happy snails and slugs, C&S not so much, but won't complain, we need it :)...See Moreivanfjunior
