Bound to happen sooner or later

My most recent monarch hatchling was deformed and couldn't open its wings. I assume it had OE. I put it in a container in the freezer to euthanize it. So far, all the others I've raised from these plants have been healthy. Is there anything you can do about contamination of the plants in the garden? I gather that you can sterilize the branches you bring in, but the plants that remain in the garden could be affected, couldn't they? Also, I am assuming that the disease was passed on from the mother when she laid the egg. Is this correct?
