Need help with my Calathea (makoyana)

OK, so I bought this beautiful plant 50% off because of the distress it is in. How do I get it to come back to life? I think it has every chance in the world if I do everthing right, it is not by any means near death! I will try to post a photo. I am new to plants and am doing very well with my outdoor garden but figured I would start collecting some houseplants for the winter months so I can still "garden" during the cold season. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!! My main concern is the tattered leaves. Will it still be OK even with the tears and holes?

Comments (5)Thank you for replies. I came across Calathea roseopicta, but because it still looks a bit different I wasn't sure if that was it. The soil gets to be dry eventually. It's wet only if I've watered it recently. I watered it yesterday and today it's still wet, though. The pot and the soil are the original ones it came in, and it was fine in it for a while. Comments (12)Morning Sovery, As I mentioned above, your Cal needs acclimating since it was summered outdoors. Think about it. When plants are outside, they get fresh, circulating air, and 'depending where one lives,' humidity. Then comes fall..plants are moved in a stuffy, dry house. Plants should be brought inside before heat is turned on. Especially, tropicals. Did I mention, Calathea picta types are very difficult? I have two..one is in a terrarium, the second is on its own. Yours is a picta..sorry don't know which variety. Some Cals are fussier than others. For instance, my C. Snake has brown tips; C. Peacock doesn't. When outdoors, they sat side by side..hauled indoors the same day. Same light, etc. Indirect-bright light is perfect. During summer, west/south windows are way too harsh. This time of year, 'at least here in IL,' s/w exposure wouldn't matter....won't burn leaves. Your east window sounds okay, as long as your Cal isn't 10' away. lol If you're worried about light, why not add artificial? You can do so inexpensively. Hygrometers..lol..Buy a second to compare. lol. We have three. Two are the same type..purchased years ago..accurate temps and humidity. The third was bought 7-yrs ago..it reads inside, outside and green house temp. Every fall I place all 3 side-by-side to compare readings. One may be a degree higher...but I consider 1 degree good enough. :) 55% humidity is great. What about temp? Is the room warm/hot? Cals do not like too much heat. My Cals are in a fairly unheated room. In fact, during cold months, the room gets pretty cold. Sometimes, too cold. Fresh air is important. Do you have a ceiling or rotating fan? If so, can you run it an hour or two a day? As long as air isn't directed on your plants for more than a few seconds at a time. Comments (0)I bought my calathea pinstripe 1.5 weeks ago. It had a few blemishes when I bought it like any natural thing. I repotted it and gave it a good watering until water came out through the drainage hole. I haven't water it since repotting because the top soil still feels damp. The pot sits on top of a saucer filled with gravel and water for added humidity even though lately the humidity in the room has been about 45-60% but the problems started before adding the saucer. The plant most definitely does not get direct sunlight. Some of the leaves have pink pinstripes like it should and some have white. I don't know if that has got to do with anything, but I've included pictures of some of the problem areas. Comments (3)why would you need a humidifier ... do you have a forced air furnace that runs 8 hours a day??? .. like mine seems to in my MI??? how about you let it adjust to the stress of moving it indoors .. make sure it gets enough proper light ... water properly ... and lets see what happens .. try not to heap stress upon stress upon stress... if it were mine.. and it was just a leaf or two.. i would just snip them off.. i would not stress it by spraying some kind of goos on it .... ken ps: i would suggest its pretty deep in that pot.. but i wont.. because i dont want you stressing it by repotting it right now ... lol.. so ignore that .. lol ... but keep it in mind for a month before it can go back outside .. so it will settle down and get over that stress before you stress it putting it outside ... and dont foget to harden it off to outdoor light when it goes outside.. so you dont stress it then ... i hope you note the key word in all that .. lol ......See MoreDawn Bixby
