We don't have ours in the same room, but we did build it out into 2 separate, but small rooms. The laundry is just big enough for the W/D stack and floor space in front of it, and then if you turn to the right, completing the 'L' shape is a wash sink.

The bathroom is a reverse of that 'L' - toilet and sink on one wall, turn and enter the shower.

We are a family of 4 and I have no problem doing laundry with our Whirlpool Duet Sport set. It even does a queen sized comforter.

The top-loading stackables are smaller in my experience, but many (most?) front loaders can be stacked.

This is ours. I love it! It's a side by side, but it functions so well for me. The top of machines like a countertop and above that I have room for three full-width elfa shelves. The shelf closest to the machines is 20" deep and is where I sort the dirty clothes; whites, colors, darks separated by the elfa shelf dividers. Second shelf is 16" deep, top shelf is 12" deep. Our house is 1200 square feet, so I had to make every square foot purposeful and I'm surprised at how well this works for me. We've been living here since the end of February.

Up until now we've been using a utility sink as a placeholder. The sink is actually centered on the vanity. Weve decided to use IKEA sektion cabinets for the vanity and I think we're going to put a in a domsjo single apron front sink. I expect it'll be a workhorse for handwashing, laundry and kids arts/crafts cleanup.

When we were renting a couple of years ago, the unit had full-size stacked GE front loaders that were great.

Small pull out ironing board inplace before the room was done. Unfortunately it is on the wrong side for a right handed ironer. But that was my only options. I like it, but don't love it. I rarely iron so it is fine. If I had a lot of ironing I would get out my standard board, which I still have somewhere:

This is my drawn plan. the room is 8x about 10". The shower pan is a standard Kohler 36x60" to help with the scale. The vanity is 60". The blue square in the upper left hand corner is my stacked W/D. The gray box next to it is my cabinets with room for the mechanicals to fit behind the cabinets. The cabinets were all custom.
