Which Farmhouse sink brand?

We're currently selecting our fixtures & fitting for our new kitchen renovation and would like hear about your experiences with farmhouse sinks? We're going with fireclay and spec'd for 36" - considering the Rohl Shaws original but would love to hear from owners...

We have had our fireclay Whitehaus for only 2 months and love it. We have the recommended grate because I am afraid of dropping cast iron into it. We do not have a garbage disposal (mostly because we have never had one) but in my research I saw some crackled sink bottoms from the vibration of disposals so look into that. This weekend I noticed some light stains and I do wash it well it every night. I used a mild bleach solution and it came right out.

I have been looking at a Reinhard 30" farm sink in Fireclay:

I have been looking at 30" because it does what I need it to do, soaks the 13x9's, and is at a fair price. We are not at the point of getting a sink yet, probably in the next month. Others have suggested looking at copper sinks, but we have not found one in our budget or that we like just yet. Going to wait till we get all the colors nailed down and see what fits and what is left of the budget.

Who has Ikea's farmhouse sink? (or farmhouse sinks in general)

As far as I can tell, the nig bummer is that its meant to be a partial overmount with a flatish lip that goes over the counter. Unless you caulk well while installing, its moldville under that lip. I like that it's easy to clean and it always looks white. We got a third party grid that helps to keep pot marks away. The LACK of depth is a relief, I like the sink around 8 inches deep. If she uses 1/2 sheet pans frequently, she needs a different sink as this one will not fit those size things. I have a two burner pancake griddle - the cheap non-stick, for home use kind - and it won't fit that. It can sit on the top, and the front and back handles will rest on the sides - so I can still clean the pan. It will fit a regular roasting pan. The other two things that I don't like about the sink is the faucet is very far back (23" or so) in comparison to 19-21" for most undermounts. It acts funny if its filled with ice - just like a glass of iced tea, it will form condensate on the underside of the sink. I imagine that varies with where you live. The Elkay Quartz Luxe sinks outperform fireclay and enameled cast iron. Fireclay is unrepairable; you can put typing fluid over the chips in your enamel until the cast iron undeneath begins to rust. The color goes all the way through the Elkay, so even it you chip it, you aren't dead. It's so hard to scratch, I have to put a diamond blade in a grinder to alter the sink flanges. Only comes in 36" though, so get a bigger cabinet please.

We just bought a sink and if I was going farmhouse it was going to be Blanco, hands down. We beat up our old Blanco and that thing just never failed to impress us. Their farmhouse also has a workstation option which I think is really ideal if you cook a lot or want some additional organization. But I'm telling you the last sink just wouldn't die... It didn't pop with hot liquids, it didn't scratch where I couldn't clean it EASILY, never saw awful distinctive spots, left cans in it with no problems, etc. All the horror stories I read while researching sinks I never had an issue with. Give Blanco a try if you like the look of their farmhouse!

I have had a Rohl Allia for going on ten years. I started out with a double bowl in one house and in my current home went to a single sink. It is nominally 30". It is white and has stayed white in 5yrs of active use. It holds my oven grates, jelly roll pans, etc. I wish I had gotten the 36" Rohl. Actually, Michael Smith had a 42" single bowl for Ann Sacks and I should have gotten that! You can never have too big a single sink in my opinion. I have dropped items in it and got a sink grid two years into its use and don't have any visible chips. I don't baby the sink. Bar keepers friend once a month and Biokleen all purpose cleaner for daily cleaning.

Stay away from the cheepchinese fireclay knockoffs. The well known brands already have enough of an issue with warpage from firing. No two sinks will be the same shape. Some of those cheap imports with the oh so American names have enough waves in the bowl to surf.

Or just go with Kohler cast iron. No one else's cast iron comes close to their US made quality.

You use your sink and faucet more than any other appliance in the kitchen. Make sure it can stand up to years of that use.

Sophie, do you know of a good brand of 'real' fireclay farm house? I really want a Kohler, but I like the farm sink vs the apron sink. Recommendation?
