Scale insects and plant id

Hi all,

I received this jade plant cutting from an online store. They have these orangish spots on them so I was wondering if it's a scale insect infestation. I would also like to know what type of a jade plant it is =I received 10 succulent cuttings, no id even though I requested id...:(. The aeonium kiwi cutting also developed an oval rust orange spot. I have bought rubbing alcohol in case these are scale insects but some expert advice and opinion would be appreciated. Also, the mother of 1000s plant has some powdery grayish brown substance on its leaves and some leaves are patchily destroyed with only a thin web like portion remaining. And finally, is the spotted stem on the last plant natural or some disease? Please help!

Looks more like traumatic damage and NOT scale. The spots could be from sun. The jade is common jade that is dry but should perk up once it grows some roots.

Thank you, bikerdoc! That cutting looks so sad- I hope one day it becomes a beautiful vibrant plant. I am happy it doesn't have scale! :)

I suggested that a better picture might result in a 'which kind of scale' identification. And it does! That's the wax scale, VERY common on hollies and a wide range of other woody plants. A quick search on 'control of wax scale' will lead to some suggestions to get this infestation under control.

What you have might well be aphids. They prefer the nice tender, nitrogen rich new growth. Since aphids can, and do, start to produce live young even while they are still nymphs themselves you will have several generations on your plant before you notice a problem and as you eliminate one generation another moves in quickly to replace them, giving the appearance that those you though you eliminated have returned. Control is realy simple with just a sharp water srpay to knock those you can see off, repeated as necessary to keep knocking them off the plant. After a time you will see the numbers diminish, but keep on spraying them off untill they are no more.

Uncertain what is happening in the 1st image you posted. Can you add a closer view of the damage? In the added images - - - The first large brown spot is sunscald. Brown areas in other images is insufficient water sometime in the past. You now live in a hot, dry region with dry summers. Depending upon where you moved from, you may need to relearn irrigation practices..

I would absolutely expect to see the spores that high....and higher. Just be grateful that the mulch is not used any where near your home, vehicles, outdoor furniture, etc. They stick like superglue. As Jean says, these interesting little fungi are not harmful but are natural decomposers. Look them up and then investigate the mulch because you just might find some of the tiny little cups. They actively feed on dead wood....wood chips, old unpainted timber, and the like.
