Master bath 'update' is now a 're-do' (pics)(xpost to Home Dec)
Comments (0)My "later on" master bath "update" turned into "more" and "now" due to a leaking shower pan. My house is a 1964 ranch originally built with sort of a "french/english country" feel. My "update" plans were to replace the sink/fixtures and countertops, texture/paint walls, re-paint cabinets and frame the mirror, still sticking with the beige/cream/taupe color scheme. Bedroom hasn't been redone. . .now it will follow the bath. The leaking shower pan added a complete shower gut/re-do/new shower fixtures (maybe a multi-head and in-out swing door). I'm afraid just replacing the shower pan and attempting to re-use the tile or match it would just look bad. I would like to keep the original floor tile and for a couple of reasons do not plan on pulling out the bulkhead or re-doing the ceiling (although it's not totally out of the question) the "big bath" for the other two bedrooms has a similar tile in white/brushed gold and the same bulkhead and that trim is all over the house (and I kind of like it. . .guess I'm a 60's kind of gal!!). So, I'm thinking just putting in 3 cans or pendants, probably cans. . .while they are beautiful, I don't like pendants in my bathroom. . tend to bang them into the mirror/wall). Will replace the large mirror with single mirrors over the lavatory and make-up area and add an electrical outlet in the space between them and change ceiling heater to a vent/heater. Probably replace the shutters (like the shutters, the inserts not so much and can't figure out how to get them out. . or how to put something in). My biggest concern is the floor. . .do you think it's salvageable and do you think I can find something for the shower that will blend. I do want some accent tiles in the shower, maybe glass?? FWIW, I'm not a "blue" person. . .more soft greens, taupe, greys, red/burgandy/pink and yellows. Any thoughts on how much, what kind, and what color of lipstick I can put on this little piggy would be greatly appreciated!!...See MoreIt's time - Master Bath Re-do
Comments (16)There is marble and then there is marble. With that wonderfully definitive statement out of the way... Source your marble, Know where it comes from. When you bottom feed on price, you can bottom feed on quality. The issue is that a bathroom shower will be demanding on a natural stone. You'll notice that some marbles look pure. They have nice white and gray tones to them, if that makes sense. You''ll see some with a yellow tone, or an occasional hint of orange. That can be in indication of iron within the marble. We all know that "rust" is iron oxide. And in a shower, a porous stone like marble, even if sealed, can wet the embedded iron and cause the stone to show orangish hues of oxidation or rust over time. Cararra, which is what you want to use, is known to have iron in it. So talk to the tile store you source it from. Some is fine, some not so fine. It's a natural material. Good marble has a tight grain. Some of the inexpensive marbles can be soft, then can pit easily, corners can break off. Some of these stones are resinated, or treated to increase their strength. The problem now is that in a shower these resinated stones can behave weirdly. They can show water differently. On a backsplash, use what you want. In a shower, you really need to be careful when you go bottom fishing on price. None of that is meant to scare you away. I's simply to make you aware. Hopefully it'll make you a smarter or savvier shopper. Since you are using marble, I highly recommend you look at using a topical membrane in your shower. That will prevent deep wetting in the shower pan and take some of the stress off of your marble. Look a Hydroban with their Laticrete flanged drain. Look at Kerdi with their flanged drain. I will gently nudge you towards either of those products. If you sway from the path, you may force me to get out my big stick. There are other topical membranes, but the key is the flanged drain. That's all for now!...See Morere-doing master bath - contractor wants to demo ceiling below
Comments (5)I'm just wrapping up a bath gut and rebuild. I completely gutted the room, including the old tile floor, mudjob it sat on and the 1x6 subfloor. Even with that I had to cut a hole in the ceiling below to access the shower elbow (took out the tub and replaced with shower only). Couple of thoughts: 1.Is the ceiling below plaster or sheetrock? If it's sheetrock...and you can live with the mess...a tear out might be easier to work with. Having said that, a small hole (I consider 2' x 2' to be small) is VERY easy to fix on sheetrock. As I found, you'll only need access to the tub/shower trap from below. 2. Plaster is a MAJOR pain in the @ss to patch. I love plaster. Have it in my house now. Love how it paints and prevents sound transmission thru the house. Even with all that, I would consider a complete tear out of plaster if A. the space is small, and B. you can live with the mess. If I had to cut a hole larger than 2ft square in my ceiling that was plaster, I would plan to hang a "new" ceiling of sheetrock over the hole and remaining plaster. It's about the only way to guarantee a clean looking ceiling. I just reread your post. Have you ever gutted something before? There's A LOT more too it than most realize. Let me know if you're new at it and I'll share what I know....See MoreI re-decorated my Master Bath
