New House - Medium Kitchen Appliance Budget - Where to Splurge?
Comments (8)Are you including tax ,delivery, and install with those prices? They seem a little high. Refrigeration:Elux does not make 36" units only 32" units. Dishwashers: Do you know if you have hard or soft water? Microwave: Sharp makes all the microwave drawers. Sharp branded units are about $800. Thermador has a flush mounted unit. Wolf has an integrated handle. They all have the same Sharp innards. Icemaker:Hoshizaki undercounter icemaker about $1600. Far superior to KitchenAid. Japanese company but undercounter icemakers made in Georgia. Rangetop: You should be looking at Bluestar and Capital Culinarian. BS has the optional built-in broiler cheese melter. If you want a grill I would look at the CC. It has a hybrid grill that has higher temps than a standard grill and lower temps for veggies too. Ovens Are you looking for electric or gas ovens? The Bluestar 30" French Door oven is $3300. So two are $6600. Most TOL double ovens or two singles are about $6500. You can easily get a TOL 48" rangetop for $5k and spend the savings on the ovens. A CC 48" rangetop with four open burners, 12" thermo-griddle and 12" grill is $5k. Gaggenau 30" double ovens are about $6700. Ventilation: Do you already have a rangehood?...See Morewhat did you splurge on? any regret
Comments (54)@raee -- yes, that's mine. Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like the color scheme. It's been 9 years now and I never tire of it. And with the four colors its easy if I ever want to change out the counters or repaint the cabinets since it could all look very different with, say, gray cabinets and walls and white counters. Also, I have variations on all those colors, plus green, throughout the house. I fell in love with the eurosplash idea which I first saw in someone's apartment kitchen. She is English and her walls were completely tiled. I didn't love her tile especially but I instantly connected with how the walls looked glossy and luxurious (also I knew I'd never need to repaint LOL). I'm odd this way but I start a kitchen by going to the tile store and seeing what I like. Tile choices are overwhelming and when I start with looking for something that calls to me vs something that's a compromise to "fit in," it seems easier. Once I pick the tile, I work in the reverse that most people here do -- I pick the paint, cabinet colors and then take all those with me to pick the counters....See MoreWhat did you splurge on?
Comments (48)Hmm, pretty much everything was a splurge - I did a whole house renovation and really needed to completely redo the kitchen and I've never had a great kitchen so I threw caution (and all of my money!) to the wind and got: custom cherry shaker style inset cabinets, including beautiful pantries and terrific inserts also made by my cabinetmaker (double level knife drawer, pull outs for pots, etc) gorgeous PA soapstone counters SZ French door fridge - this one I resisted because I thought, really, I have to get SZ? But like others, I had a relatively small amount of space for the refrigerator and this model has the most interior space for my space. And I love it - produce stays fresh soooo long. Custom Julien SS sinks (one custom because of offset drain) - one 33 x 16 x 8 and one 18 x 18 x 10. Capital range - this one I'm not sure about - the fan that runs to cool off the oven is sooo loud! Do other Capital owners suffer this? And it sometimes starts running before I turn off the range (e.g., yesterday after maybe 30 minutes at 350). My lighting - ok, I have a close friend who is one of, if not the, top lighting designers in the DC metropolitan area who took charge, not only of my lighting but also serving as my right hand/supervisor of builder, etc. She did amazing lighting everywhere and it really shows in the kitchen, where I also installed a gorgeous Hubbardton Forge pendant over the peninsula, terrific under cabinet lighting, and up lighting in my two glass front cabinets. Bosch DW - I know people complain but I have not one complaint. I ended up with the top of the line (at the time) because I wanted the extra space for wineglasses and a panel-ready front (not as many options if you get panel-ready) and I love it. The kitchen - no, the entire house - turned out great. My cabinetmakers were especially great - I used them not only for the kitchen and mudroom but they also made three bathroom vanities for me, plus a full height linen cabinet door for one bath and a built in dresser in the master BR suite opposite the closet. Oh, and they also did the gorgeous fireplace surround I put in after ripping out the (locally quarried years ago) granite fireplace....See MoreWhere would you place the kitchen appliances?
Comments (5)where do you envision the most seating at eating times to occurr? island or big 48 round table in the alcove? some people are dedicated to meal times set up at a table... whereas some people find they end up using the island for a greater percent of meal time sessions.....maybe this has to unfold but fridge placement on shorter run vs. longer back wall would be a choice I'd make with this in mind. range and hood on the longer back wall w venting, hopefully. So lets say the island in a hypothetical sense becomes high use destination for casual meals / some dinners and everything else w food and social times .....and the open living room is right there. So 1. -fridge to shorter run ...microwave on shorter run either under counter or ledge of upper cabinet or ge spacesaver under upper cab. 2. range and hood on longer back wall w venting 3. sinks: larger single bowl cleanup and smaller 2nd sink. you have room still on short run for small sink and larger cleanup sink can go to back wall. People seem to like island free.....but small sink [ option] to place on island at pantry end of course. Big thing: I would discourage the double sink if you have the second sink, Get a single bowl deep sink and dishwasher w good efficiency next to it. you have a very open plan....the one thing I'd most prefer is the fridge on the side run because the unit is less on view and I never find fridges to be great in visual lines. more steps from table but seating is at island too, and then liv space is right there, so you have to calculate this out a bit....See MoreLaurel Warner
