Way Back Machine: Fragrances

The thread about Noxema made me think about this.

When I was a little boomer:

My grandfather smelled like sawdust most days,

& on special occasions he smelled like Old Spice.

Daddy smelled like Aqua Velva.

Most days, Granny smelled like coffee & dishwater, but she smelled like Jergens Lotion (cherry/almond) when I spent the night with her. I guess that was her one indulgence.

I can't remember my mother having a scent, but I know she liked Avon fragrances.

The aroma of coffee takes me back, sometimes to Granny's kitchen, more often to my Aunt Lillie's kitchen.

The rich acrid smell of permanent wave solution transports me to my Aunt Ruth's beauty shop.

& "breakfast" aromas, like bacon/eggs/coffee/toast all at the same time take me to my Aunt Gladys's house.

Her husband worked nights, so he had "breakfast" around 6 PM. We loved to spend the night with Aunt Gladys & have breakfast for dinner! As a bonus (as if a bonus were needed), when we finished our meal, we got to take the egg shells & coffee grounds out to her worm bins.

& of course chalk, new books, & freshly sharpened pencils call up all those first days of school after summer vacation!

What fragrances/aromas/smells transport you in the WayBack Machine?
