Tiger Swallowtail

Hey

this year is the first year I was able to raise Tiger Swallowtails successfully. I did three, all three of them where on Ash i'm not sure what kind of Ash it is. Yesterday I went out into the Horse field and found four just Hatched Baby tigers, on the very tip leaf of the baby ashes. I'm so Happy! One thing I learned is that for how big the get, they take a long time, they don't eat a long and they don't have big chrysalises. One Question do you think the Chrysalises will over winter or Hatch?

Well I hope someone close to where you are can advise you abt

The number of broods per season.I love Tigers,they are very common

Here in south Alabama where I live. I live in the country on a place

Surrounded by mixed eastern woodlands,and I do not use any products

Harmful to butterflies and hummingbirds.

I wish I could get a chance to raise some tiger cats,but I do not find

Them.I guess they may stay up in the trees.

Good luck, Jacob. They are very common here in New Jersey right now as well. They love the Joe Pye weed. I think the major host plant here is tulip poplar, which we have a lot of. They are beautiful butterflies.

Apparently, where the dark morph eastern tiger swallowtails are common, some males have the dark morphology too. I'd thought that the dark ones were always female. But that might explain the mating flights I've seen for swallowtails that had striped bodies but dark colors that I thought were black swallowtails. Congrats, Daisy! I've found tiger swallowtails on wild black cherry (more than any host), wafer ash, sweetbay magnolia, and tulip tree. But I've never found many, at least at one time. They use a variety of host plants, don't they? And congrats on the black swallowtails, too! I'm raising black swallowtails and giant swallowtails myself - giants on rue and wafer ash, and blacks on fennel. Sherry

One of mine from earlier this year. Sitting on a hoptree leaf.

I currently have 8 of them in the bird poop phase. All eggs found on hoptree.

It is either 6 or 8. I'll have to put one under my microscope and figure it out.
