Building Materials Price Forecast - Build now or 2014?
Comments (22)We waited last year due to higher costs and seasonal weather. I will be checking again next month. It's looking like we will have to compromise some sqfootage. Dbrad- we will grab a paddle too as many of us are in this boat together. I scour the market in my spare time and even have been to a few showings but I have realized nothing will check all our boxes either. I am beginning to think it's like comparing apples to oranges since it's so hard to compete with this idea of the "fictitious" home that is conceived in our heads;). I'm sure reality, for us will consist of a work of compromise and more DIY landscaping and yard work left than we hoped to tackle. To the OP even though we are in SC our local contractor said OSB went double after hurricane Sandy so we waited in hopes...on a side note it's nice to worry about luxuries like space and level of finish in contrast to the cost of storm devastation....See Moresalvage yards for building materials
Comments (22)As my partner likes to remind me, those treasures have to be moved, cleaned, stored, organized and reorganized, and usually modified. In our case, they often end up getting moved multiple times before installed, sold or donated. The perfect item is usually not available at the perfect time or place and if it is, there is probably a pricetag that reflects the sellers opinion of that perfection. One of my weaknesses is vintage light fixtures. I have a couple of gorgeous ones hanging in my garage that will have to be moved with me to hang in the new garage until the right location calls out for one of them. I love the unique items and figuring out where to use them, but the logistics of using the cheap finds ensures that very few actually end up to be true bargains. This bed is one of my favorite salvage pieces. Of course, it wasnt a bed until my partner and I invested many hours into assembling the parts. The headboard and footboard started life as newel posts and stair railings and the bed rails came from an oak fluorescent light fixture. We bought the stair railings and posts at a demo sale and removed them ourselves. We disassembled, trimmed, rearranged, and assembled a bed. The direct costs were under 200 dollars but when the hours are added up, this bed is priceless....See MoreBuilding material prices 2021
Comments (4)"...western spruce, pine and fir lumber hit a new record high of US$963 per thousand board feet on Tuesday and the lumber composite price is less than one per cent away from its all-time high set in mid-September"* National Association of Homebuilders Supplies remain tight. We were told, "put in the order. We just can't guarantee the delivery date." (Tract builders get first dibs.) An infill 6,700 sf home underway behind us was held up for five days waiting for the final roofing plywood to arrive....See MoreWhere do you go for deals on building materials, fixtures, etc?
Comments (8)I don't do much online shopping. But I often hit the sales sections at bigger box stores and wait for sales. I hit the ReStores and other materials resale shops. Bigger cities often have places that have neat salvage finds. And more showrooms and materials dealers in general. Folks sometimes luck out at things like barn sales, shop closings, flea markets, resale and thrift stores. Hunt backroads for reclaims. A lot of people seem to find luck using local trade sites- but those can also have scammers or sketchy going on too. Craigslist, FB Marketplace, neighbor apps, those sorts of trade sites. Some areas have odd resale places, usually surplus or overstocks, that can be hit or miss on finds. The stuff is new, but often not the usual. Redistribution pallets can contain finds, but not for the faint of heart. Some folks develop relationships at the dead ends- places like junkyards. Or a contractor that has to pull stuff and it gets tossed if no one else wants it. And when good stuff comes in, you get to know :) All depends on what one is looking for. Getting a pallet of lumber or brick, or wanting the consistancy of the same kind of paint used throughout a house, that would be more of a go the the store and get it on sale deals. Getting a cute light fixture for a powder room could come from anywhere....See MoreRelated Professionals
