Comments (31)I almost did, tibs. Usually do, but I am the only kraut lover in this family anymore. I have so many jars of it in the pantry from past cabbage harvests, I decided not to. Homemade kraut is good and it's not hard to make, but whooie, the stench when it first starts fermenting and bubbling. My dd brought a beau home once to meet us and I had kraut fermenting in the solarium. It really smelt like somebody broke wind for a solid day. She was so embarrassed, and he was too. I told them it was just the kraut, and I don't think they believed me. Another time, my DD's inlaws were here from England when I was fermenting kraut. I don't think they believed me, either. LOL. Anyhows, I don't think I could handle that stench when the thermometer is over ninety. I ended up giving some of it to the chickens, and blanching the rest and freezing it in gallon bags for boiled cabbage and soups later. I usually can that as well, but again when it's over ninety out, I just wasn't motivated to get out the pressure canner....See MoreTomato sandwiches!
Comments (19)PV, I an glad you posted pics. of the Striped tomato. I have a couple of plants growing this year, but I haven't had any ripe tomatoes until today and it was just a grape type - Sugary. Judging by the size of the the Striped, I don't think I'll get any ripe ones. We started having warm temps. just this past week, so I think we'll be in for a lot of green tomatoes this year. Comments (37)definately a BLT! When I make sandwiches for lunch, I make two, one for me and one for DH. Recently we were sitting here munching on BLTs, and as I was getting toward the end of the sandwich, I asked DH if he noticed that --- when we have BLTs, he NEVER gets that last 1/4 of my sandwich that I usually can't finish. He said "I sure did notice that!" I never turn over that last portion to him when it is a BLT, but every other kind I do -- oh, wait I also always finish a grilled cheese (but the is a winter sandwich.)...See MoreMy first tomato sandwich
Comments (18)I really don't even like tomatoes too much, except for cherries and salad ones. I only eat them raw. When I lived in the country, I grew a lot of tomatoes, mostly for my mother to can and freeze and for both of us to make green tomato pickles and chow chow every year. I don't can anymore, or do pickles, so I only need one good beefsteak for sandwiches and a smaller one for eating out of hand. Really don't even need the smaller one if I have cherries. I don't like tomato sauce except in spaghetti sauce and usually don't even like tomatoes in my veggie soups. Just not a fan of cooked tomatoes. May be trauma from my grammar school years where they gave up whole canned tomatoes in little paper cups for lunch ECK! I'm someone who doesn't experiment much with veggies. I mostly grow "old faithfuls" that have done well for me in the past. Unfortunately, my two favorite varieties from SC don't seem to like it much down here, so I'm experimenting. I think Cherokee Purple will be my beefsteak from now on. Early Girl is good for eating out of hand (I love just eating tomatoes whole), but it doesn't seem to bear well for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'll try the bush Early Girl in the fall and see what happens. So now I'm choosing cherries and salad tomatoes. I am still partial to Super Sweet 100, but didn't get those seeds this year, so now I have Everglades and Black Cherry and will do Yellow Pear in the fall. I call cherry tomatoes "garden candy." Silvia, when I was searching for something on tomatoes here on GW, I found a post where you said you were growing 45 varieties of tomatoes. I can't even imagine that. I've never grown more than 4, and that was when I had acreage to grow them on....See MoreUser
