What a lovely, beautiful house and setting and yard, landscaping! Well I do like black for your front door. I do like the exterior colors as you have them now. I disagree about painting the fence etc the same as the body of house.

I don't follow the notion of painting your front door to match the interior colors. Not sure if I would use a bright color like yellow. Sorry I'm not much help I like it the way you have it now.

I looked at your book and I am a bit confused. Are you only needing to change the front door color? What color did you want? I agree with the ratio of white to the body color for trim. I would be happy that way but the majority would not. I also think the black door was too sophisticated/urban for your pastoral home. The door does not look bad, I like it. I just think something else would have been better.

You have a lovely home and landscaping. I like the fact that your color consultant is also a landscape architect. I'd love to have her name. Do you think she'd give online consultations? I don't know where she is, but I'm in PA.

I think she's right about the black door being too dark from a distance and something lighter would look more welcoming. I'd find a color that would work with what you already have so you don't have to do a massive paint job.

I don't think I have trim at the bottom of my wooden clapboard so it's all painted the same color. I'd paint your bottom trim to match the siding.

With the hedge you have in the front of it, you really don't need that fence there, so I agree with her that it's a bit too much and painting it darker will make it look less busy.

No opinion on the shutter hinges. Are there any hinges on them now? How were they mounted? If you get working hinges, you'll definitely have to get those things to hold them back. You'd also need additional hardware to be really functional so it's just a cosmetic question.

Thanks for your comments-this site is great! I added more notes under my pics in my ideabook of what the House Color Consultant said. (I have pages and pages of notes.) Emmarene, I'm gettting ready to paint the entire exterior so I can go any way at all with paint. I pulled out my old notes from class and thought I'd try to follow what the HCC was suggesting. I'm liking the house body color as is. (although I would be willing to consider sommething else). Not at all sure how to handle the trim or door taking into account what she said.

If I change the trim to 2/3 white-1/3 body, will the contrast be enough to warrant painting the white gutters? They are mounted onto trim and should be the same color. How does paint on metal gutters hold up?

Door would be in greens or roses family if I listen to what she says about flow...but I'm paralyzed about picking a color. I know my last cranberry was too dark. Also I have to come up with a shutter color that is a darker form of house color. Don't know how dark to make them?

Unfortunately my shutters are just the cheaper nailed on ones. They aren't the nice wood ones. I don't know if it would be worth the expense of making them "work".

I'm drawn to the Cape Cod look (although I'm in NJ). The sign and knockers are from Nantucket where we used to take the kids and my parents and rent the cheapest house we could find that took dogs. Also we spend every weekend in the summer at the Jersey shore where there are a lot of grey houses and white trim. I think that's why I'm having a hard time getting away from the Walpole Woodworkers white fence/arbor/trim on grey look, and on to thinking about bisque trim or 2/3-1/3 trim. But the HCC would prob say I'm at neither the Cape or the shore so give it up and blend in with the country/suburbs.

crl_ , Yes that's it-that's all I have uploaded in my ideabook. My interior and exterior colors, and photos of my exterior house. After looking at the photos, any help in picking my door/trim/shutter colors appreciated :-)

chickadee2-she had been in business for years and I see her landscape architect license expired in 2012. She was in Summit, NJ but had clients in many states. I don't know if she is even still doing this. Joan Eastman-Bennett. (Let me know if it's against protocol to give out a name pls.) I had to bring tons of photos to class-she never saw my property in person.

I can't figure it out either. You might just post the pics you want us to see within this thread. That makes it much easier for us to comment.

Well, I like your side door! Pretty shade of grey and I like the basket. But that's all I've got.

BTW, we hired a color consultant for our last house and I always thought that one of the trim colors she chose looked like bandaids. (it was a brickhouse with 4 or 5 trim colors).

I learned from that 1)color is very personal and 2)you should use professionals cautiously ... get their advice and insight, but don't necessarily follow is slavishly. Try to understand the "why" of the recommendation.

I would never paint that fence. It is classic and should be white. Its lovely btw

Emmarene-you are right. There is blue in the grey. It's Olympic Stonehedge and it's def not taupey or plain grey on my house, it's grey w/ blue undertones. I'm supposed to pick a shutter color a few shades darker...any ideas appreciated.
