Wolf range - duel fuel or gas if same price?

I'm new here but looking for advice as I finish my reno

i didnt think I could afford a wolf range for our kitchen after our Renos but I managed to find a floor model on sale for a great price in gas.

When I arrived at the showroom, the salesman also showed me a brand new never used floor model in duel fuel that they need to get rid of, same configuration (48" 4 burners, griddle, charbroiler) for the SAME PRICE as the gas.

i understand the duel fuel is usually more expensive - but if they were the same price, which would you suggest?

Two issues here.

Read about the problems with the blue chipping enamel. There is a thread about a lawsuit against Wolf for this.

Second they are coming out with new burners with higher BTUs.

if you like to cook, I would read about all the different choices on this forum.

Thank you. I do like to cook but i find I am more of a baker- and duel fuel was suggested for this reason? I understand the gas oven provides a more moist environment.

id like to wait for the new generation and understand their will be more power in the burner and BTUs but won't be able to afford it

the range in question right now in either gas or duel fuel is a steal at $12,000

my salesman has ensured me that any chipping can be remedied under warranty.

Definitely tricky. Wolf uses 2 orifices, one at the burner base and another near the knob. I don't remember for certain but I believe the top needs to come apart in order to do it. You should have a servicer do it if you can.

I have the Wolf DF. Google Wolf blue chipping. It is well documented on this site. There is one lawsuit over thus and maybe more to come. Wolf has redesigned the M series wall oven to supposedly address this but they have not on the DF range. I would recommend a separate range top and oven so that you can pick what is best for you for each component. With a range you are stuck with replacing the range if the oven goes. I have not seen any DFs that I am that taken with. I am waiting to see how the Miele is over time. I am also looking at BlueStar which is all gas, but I have an electric wall oven.

In the end, I ened up replacing with a Blue Star range with gas for both oven and burners. I've largely been happy with it. The oven igniter broke just after having two years, but it was a relatively minor fix but not covered under warranty.

We are about to buy appliances. The 48 inch Wolf Gas range and the Cafe Dual Fuel are both approximately the same price. I keep going back and forth. Gas or Dual Fuel. We are not bakers and cook meats and roasted vegetables. DOes anyone have experience with either range or have advice.

Well yes, any chipping will be taken care of for two years. Read your warranty very carefully. "Decades of service" on the website--not in the warranty. You can read some of my previous posts for what happens after that. My chipping started at 4.5 years. Wall ovens have tended to chip earlier and in the corners. The ranges seem to chip after the two years and over the element. Even if you buy an extended service agreement, read it carefully because the enamel can be excluded or considered cosmetic. To pay for the repair after 2 years, you might be able to get them to send the oven liner but labor starts at $800 but they won't say how much it will be AND they will only guarantee the new part for a year so you may have to factor that in as a frequent expense.

You will commonly read or hear that gas is moist heat. It is true that gas releases water as a byproduct of combustion. When you first start the oven you will have some condensation. As the oven preheats though, and starts ventilating the water is removed along with heat (into your kitchen). An electric oven does not need to be ventilated as much so although the electric element does not put out moisture, the food does and the oven holds on to this because it is less ventilated. The increased humidity of an electric oven allows a better rise and promotes starch gelatinization. This is good at the beginning of some baking. A gas oven being drying promotes browning. This is beneficial at the end of baking and for roasting. One of the benefits of a good electric convection oven is the ability to start baking in a regular bake mode and end with bake convection for browning. Many electric ovens also have convection roast which is usually a high speed fan. You can still bake with gas but if you bake a lot especially cakes, you might want electric.

My Wolf DF is unusable unless the food is covered and the convection is off so no good for baking anymore. I have not found a DF range that I have had any confidence in so have not replaced mine. Luckily I have a wall oven that works as well as the Wolf did. I would advise anyone renovating a kitchen to put in separate range tops and wall ovens so you can buy "best" oven and "best" range top. If part fails you just have to replace that part.

If you are going all gas then I would look at BlueStar. They just redesigned that and the oven cavity is bigger than Wolf holding a full sheet.
