Pool Heater dilemma - need reviews/advice please!
Comments (4)Oil fired heaters in the US don't exist anymore. You decision to move away from that fuel is a very good one I suspect. One concern on that front is are you in northern Virginia or Nova Scocia as your references seem a bit non descriptive. I don't know what is in Canada as an available fuel. Generally speaking, oil is replaced with propane. This is usually just as much a budget issue as oil since the two are tied in both manufacturing and pricing. You mentioned tanks, burying, etc..., Here in NJ, I am not allowed to deal with these tanks. I used to get to pass this section on to a buddy of mine I grew up with (which means he's a mensch too!) to pull the tank and oil because subterranean tanks are no longer allowed here. The propane dealer deals with any needed propane storage issue. My dealer (I have propane for my pool) provided a pair of 125 gallon tanks for my 300K heater which gives me about a 30 to 45 day supply after I heat up the pool. They are above ground and withing 120' of the location they need from the truck to refill. As long as the stickers IDing them stays visible, I can paint them or have things growing like ivy if I like. Different areas may have different rules. Asking is the best way I know to finding out those rules. My wife and I don't find they stick out like sore thumbs in my yard but some people may for theirs. As for your situation, a heat pump has limits. If those limits are outside your needs, its use is not really for you. You have read enough and so I don't need to reiterate the a HP may be nice for you for the pool but the spa use will be a different situation. A gas fired heater has so many advantages there. As for which brand, my area has a number of brands available. The ones I like best happen to be Pentair. What is best in your area may be similar or it may rely on what you can get serviced easily and that may be a different brand. I don't recommend a heater be purchased off the net but rather be sized properly and equipped as needed on site and professionally. Unless you are planning to do the install and have the experience needed, you won't save a buck. Scott...See Morebest gas pool heater
Comments (2)I like the Rheem/Ray Pak (same heater, different distribution channels) as a replacement, such as in your situation. That's a very serious failure you experienced and very unusual to boot. The symptoms you describe sure sound like the gas flow may not have been adequate. Gas flow needs to be tested with the system in a static/off and dynamic/on state. I'd want to know how the tech determined these the dynamic on flow. Things I'd look for would be the meter's size, the length of the run, the supply pipe size, and the length of 3/4" pipe connecting the heater's regulator to to the supply pipe. I suppose it's possible a spider's or moth's nest hatched and baby spiders or caterpillars made webs that clogged things up for some burners. Another possible cause would be a gas regulator failure. It's rare but it happens. It's also possible a safety circuit device shorted, a rodent got in and did some damage... There really isn't any way for us to determine it without seeing the unit and going CSI on it. Scott...See MoreGas Heater or Electric Heat Pump - Located in MA
Comments (4)Hi racket, Yes in the new england climate we really can only use the pool from April (if we are really lucky) through September. The problem is that temperatures in April can be in the 40s overnight or lower even though they may reach lower to upper 70s during the day. I don't know if this is really enough ambient heat to make the heat pump function well. That being said if the operating cost for an electric heat pump really is a lot lower (presumably the heat pump would need to be operating continuously whereas the gas heater could be turned on say 24 hours before you plan to use it or kept on all the time) then perhaps it is worth it in the long run. Certainly the initial cost is probably actually lower given the potential cost of the gas line installation. Thank you for your thoughts!...See MoreReplacement Pool Pump Advise - Sizing and Brand
Comments (2)Whisperflo is a good option and you probably could go with a 1hp with no problem. We oversize everything in Texas, always have. Same with pools. I have been in the Pool Biz in DFW for 31 years and nothing has changed. Whatever brand, this would be a good time to consider a 2speed pump. It may be required soon, as Texas seems to follow California, and they already have the requirement on new pools. The Jandy guy says his pump delivers more gpm on low speed than his competitors. One thing though. It's going to take up allot more room on the pad, than that Challenger did. It's got a gynormous basket and comes with union fittings. Most new pumps do though. Good luck with what ever you get....See Moretigereye
