It's very unusual. I had to watch the video to figure it out. I think you need a big space and a house full of unusual furnishings to pull it off.

Are you hanging a portrait slanted to the left or right so it appears diagonally? I'm not sure I understand that part.

Thanks for the comments so far. Here's the space. Could anything clash more than the current wall color and that watermelon table? I don't think so. The band aid color is going and it'll be a dark blue. The current fixture is hanging about 78" from the ceiling.

kswl, yeah, that was unclear, sorry. The portrait is a painting that the artist did on a diagonal, so the it's a diamond rather than a square. There he is below (the portrait, not the artist. I just had a large glass of wine.) There are lots of angles and diamond shapes happening in the foyer, most of which can't be seen in this photo.

You would have an awful lot of square/rectangles in that space with the window muntins and door moldings, but if you love it, then go for it. Maybe you could take the muntins off of that window?

I like the fixture but am concerned it is too contemporary for your space. Your staircase is focal point of entry and it is traditional.

Is this Bbstx from Gardenweb of old?? If so, my vote is yes, because your tastes are truly quirky and I think you will enjoy your light for a long time. Another person might get tired of something this unusual in a year, but if you are bbstx I think it will be fine.

kswl, no, I was The Red House. I know bbstx has the console same table in her dining room. I asked her some questions about it before I bought mine. My taste is pretty quirky though, I don't think I'd tire of it.

I don't mind mixing the modern and traditional, and even though the fixture is modern and unusual, it's pretty formal. The point about a lot of squares, sharp angles and rectangles in that space is a good one. It might be way too much. Edit to add: Last night my husband said that while I was in another area of the showroom, the receptionist said that the people who stop and really look at the light are either designers, architects, or artists. That explains why we're drawn to it.

This is the fixture that was the front-runner until we saw the wacky one yesterday. Again, it's a modern take on something traditional. I'm not sure how it would look against the deep blue walls.

There are much nicer fixtures available other than the ones posted.

love those dallas showroom videos- watched quite a few when shopping for our current chand! :) I think the idea that it will look like it's suspended from nothing adds to the cool factor- that's not obvious from the picture... I think I would like it more if the cubes were just interlocking and hanging naturally rather than fixed in place in the middle of the cubes, but if you really like it, go for it! I like it much better than what is currently there!

add- don't know dimensions of the 2nd light you show, but that looks like it is too small??? and, 4 lights are probably too few to light a foyer and staircase.....

I think one of the issues with asking opinions on a quirky item that you love is that a lot of other people won't love it. Usually when I fall in love with a decorating item, it's something a bit wierd. And that's why I love it. But it also means a lot of other people don't love it.

I think a foyer is the perfect place for something quirky. It doesn't have to coordinate with a lot of other items. And it sets the tone for the house. So if your taste is broader than just what is currently sold by pottery barn (don't get me wrong, I like pottery barn!), the foyer seems like a great place to announce that.

Anyway, I based my response above saying that I think you should buy it if the size is right on this kind of logic and your statement that you and your dh both really like the piece.

It's not my style at all, but I have to say, I think it would look REALLY cool from outside at night.

Personally I didn't like it but looking at your foyer, I think it would work and it would distract the eye from the other squares in the area. I think it's a better than the current foyer light considering the space.

I absolutely get that this is not for everyone, or even most people. I know that a lot of us here can, and do, look beyond our own personal style when commenting. That is much appreciated. I also know that some people will find my taste appalling. That's okay. I understand.

My reservations on this are that it might be too many boxes in a small space, and the price. Even though it's heavily discounted, it is significantly more than I thought I'd be spending. It would also be hard to dust. On the pro side: it's very cool, it would set the tone for the house, we find it interesting, it would look great at night, it's deeply discounted, and it looks different from every angle.

I'm trying to not to rush the decision, which is hard because can't wait to get rid of what is currently there. I suspect the realtor told the sellers to update the lighting and they went to Home Depot chose one fixture. They put the same one in the kitchen, the foyer, and the dining room. I really dislike it.

With a few metallic and glass cube tables or accessories elsewhere in the house it would blend in.

I really like it and it's quirkiness but I just wonder if it will be too much with the also quirky diamond-shaped painting, along with all the other squares going on. Will people feel drunk/tipsy when they walk in the door........lol.

I think it's still in the store because it's one of those things that people like because it's so different yet they're not willing to buy it because they don't want to look at it the next 10+ years.

Since both you and DH like it I would say go for it, but only if it adds balance to the architecture of the house. Since your home has so many square and angles I don't see this light standing out as a unique, & contrasting, feature.

It's NMS, but I can see why you might be drawn to it. I also like the squares, but the angled lighting is too discordant for me.

I've talked myself into purchases like that because of the price and regretted almost every one of them, most recently a custom sofa/chair/ottoman that I dumped for nothing on CL three years later after hating it as it came in the front door.

When you describe it, I read "price" often. My husband keeps showing me classic cars that we can buy for a steal, "we could save $15k if we buy this one".......of course I ignore the message he's sending me!

Okay, so now I'm assuming you decided you LOVE it. I'm guessing it has been in the showroom forever and they would love to sell it because it's not a mass appeal item. Go back and offer 15% of the retail price in cash to take it immediately. See what they say.....but maybe don't spend more than you planned to in the first place.

Great mockup! Glad to hear you weren't thrilled with, pbh (one doesn't want to profer advice which may be offensive). I would like to give a shout out to our eating area chandelier - I did not want a 'chandelier' visible from the street, so this, being different, worked for us. I still love it, 3 -4? years later. Varaluz Fascination Nevada.
