need for bees. what should I plant
Comments (39)I think Billy hits on a good topic that I would like to expand upon a bit. Planting things for the pollinators to feed on is terrific, but a lot of what we grow doesn't require pollinators so it won't necessarily lead to higher yields for us. Many plants such as lettuce and other greens are harvested before they flower at all so clearly no pollination is needed. Many flowering plants such as beans, peas, tomatos, peppers etc. also require no insect pollination to yield well. Corn is wind pollinated. Roots crops don't require pollination. You get the idea. Things like many vine crops (cukes, squash, pumpkin, melons) do require insect pollination, but will having a wildflower garden filled with nectar/pollen rich flowers get the job done or will it just attract pollinators to the wildflower garden? . Hypothetically it could reduce pollination of the plants we need pollinated if more preferred food sources for the pollinators are close by. Personally I love the pollinators and plant things to attract them every year. I don't do this for better yields from my plants, but for the enjoyment of watching them go about their business and support their overall population....See MoreWhat type of shrub should I plant?
Comments (3)Abelia 'Kaleidoscope'' Kaleidoscope' performs best in the landscape under full sun to partial shade. These conditions promote the best color and fullness. Occasionally, this plant may produce water shoots that should be immediately pruned out. To maintain a well-shaped plant, one may trim 'Kaleidoscope' basically anytime from spring to late summer. This versatile plant is frost, drought and heat tolerant as well as deer-resistant. A position in full sun brings out the most vibrant color changes in the leaves. It is eye-catching as a container specimen in a small garden, good for a formal or informal hedge, in low water/low maintenance gardens or small gardens or spaces, is distinctive as an accent plant and spectacular in mass plantings. Comments (7)Sondra, when you start choosing foundation plants, you'll probably want mostly evergreen shrubs. Be sure to carefully read the plant descriptions on the labels and don't plant anything under your windows that wants to grow 10-feet tall or you'll spend the rest of your life pruning to keep them short! Just because the name of the plant says "dwarf" or "compact" that doesn't mean it will stay small. For instance, Ilex cornuta Casey's Dwarf (Casey's Dwarf Holly) will grow to a height of 10 to 15 ft. and so will Ilex cornuta Cartwright Compacta (Cartwright Compacta Holly). On the other hand, Ilex crenata compacta (Japanese Holly), only grows 3 to 5 feet tall. Point is, be sure to do your homework before spending a lot of time, effort, and money. Comments (6)Before I thought about planting I'd address access to that door. Some kind of path leading from the door so you're not stepping onto grass. With that in place it might be better to expand the planting areas and then consider what to put in them. It all depends on what is behind the camera. Is this a front door? A rear door? What do you see when you're standing on the stoop?...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
