Kitchen backsplash design dilemma

I sketched out a kitchen backsplash design for our remodel project, using a triptych of three arts-and-crafts-inspired tiles I bought in from Motawi Tileworks in Ann Arbor, Michigan, along with some cut-out printer paper standing in for the 4x2 subway tile.

My big question now is whether the quartersawn oak frame I've envisioned around the triptych will be a bear to keep clean. What else could I use besides wood? The tiles need some kind of visual framing device around them. I don't like the way they look if they're directly embedded in the brick layout of the subway tile.

Would dark gray slate work as a "frame"? Color-wise, and simplicity-wise, I like the idea. But I'm wondering how thick the material will be in relation to the art tiles and subway tiles. The art tiles are very "proud" -- about 3/4" thick.

Other details: painted wood cabinets, stainless hood and range (no back panel), quartersawn oak floors, Caesarstone quartz countertops in "Piatra Gray".
