Cathy, that's a Carolina sphinx moth/Manduca sexta, which comes from the (in)famous tobacco hornworm. Those are the cats we most commonly find on our tomatoes, not the actual tomato hornworms. Beautiful moth! Sherry

Interestingly, I just came across one of these today, but didn't get a photo. It moved quickly and heavily, almost like a grasshopper. Thanks for the post and reply.

I move caterpillars that I find on my VEGGIE plants, too. Straight to where the birds are congregating, lol. That is, unless they don't seem to be eating too much. There are tons of Sphinx moth species. The White-lined Spinx caterpillar is one that is a more general type of feeder than many. The Tobacco Hornworm (which is what most people see on their 'maters) feed almost exclusively on members of the Solanaceae family, such as tomatoes, potatoes, nightshade, tobacco, etc.

Pretty creature. Doing a quick search, it looks like a Brown House Moth (Hofmannophila pseudospretella)
