Need to get my house more comfortable and bills under control.

Hi. We bought a house in Westchester NY (Hudson river area) one
year ago. I will post some details below. Bottom line is the first year in the
house was very uncomfortable. Cold in Winter (kids rooms would not get above 60
degrees some nights); hot in Summer. I tried to keep energy usage down (hence
some of the discomfort), but bills are still running $1100 per month, as high
as $1500 in peak heating and cooling months.

I had an energy audit performed, and it highlighted that there
is a fair amount of leakage. We are
working with various firms to tighten the thermal envelope (retrofit recessed
lights, close off whole house fans, etc).
I’m probably going to enclose the crawl space and insulate there as well
(there is a concrete foundation/floor) as the first level wood floors were unbelievably
cold last winter. Basically the plan is
to seal off as much leakage in the ceiling/attic as possible, possibly add more
insulation up there, enclose and insulate the basement, and then see how things go this
winter. I’m not planning on drilling
holes and adding insulation in walls etc in this first round.

We plan to be in the house for 15+ years. There may be a desire for more
heating in the future (bring the garage into the envelope; also there is a pool
that we don't heat as much as we would like - I would love to work it into the
solution). So in addition to the ongoing work on the home's efficiency, I would
like to take a realistic look at moving to geothermal. Seem like it may make
sense given our current energy costs, our time horizon, etc.

Is there a directory to firms in my area that do this type of work, or some way
of starting the dialogue with some experts? I have only found a few firms that
advertise geothermal work. From my initial research I have gathered that this
is a pretty specialized are of expertise, and that having expertise makes a big
difference.

Also, any guidance on whether I am approaching my problems
appropriately / or inappropriately would be greatly appreciated. I’m a first time homeowner so this is quite
new to me.

Thanks for any help! If there is any more info that would be helpful - please
just ask.
