Anyone with Thyroid issues?
Comments (8)I hear you and sympathize. I have thyroid problems but not Hashimoto's. Mine is just not functioning adequately. The doctor hasn't given me a name for the problem. I take Levoxyl (plus Cytomel). I'm much older than you, 58. Want to warn you that you are right to be concerned now because it will get a whole lot harder when you reach menopause. Sorry to be negative but I'm hoping to help others keep from being in denial about their weight. I buried my head in the sand and allowed myself to get to 250 lbs! I'm can assure you that the quality of life at 250 is rather poor. Also, if you are married, your poor quality of life affects your partner as well. Not good. So, I don't have a solution but want to encourage you to exercise and move. Find something that is fun that doesn't seem like too much work. If you are single, perhaps a bicyle club would be good. I have recently joined a gym and enjoy swimming 20 laps per day. Hope to move to more activity when I lose more. You might consider a gym. I'm sure you've heard of these suggestions. I'm sure you have heard others say that "you ought to be glad, things could be worse". I'm afraid I'm going to be one of those. I have a lovely friend who is quite attractive, very petite and has always been trim. I've watched her eat and she doesn't watch her food intake that much. She doesn't even like to exercise so she doesn't. But... she gets migraine headaches that cause her to become totally unable to work/play/eat for days. Lots of pain. I must say if I had to trade problems with her, I wouldn't. For some reason, recently, even with my thyroid problems, my appetite is under control and I've been able to lose weight (30 pounds lost since Januaary 04). There are lots of possible reasons. I'm trying many things. Too many to include here but want to encourage you to keep trying. One thing that seems to really help is that I eat nuts at the end of a meal to keep me from eating too much. It seems to shut down my hypothalmus gland. Overeating, quantity has been my problem. Didn't really sound like that is your problem but in case it is and you find yourself eating when you shouldn't try a small handful of nuts. I know they are relatively high in calories but on those day I eat the most nuts, I lose weight. Go figure! I don't eat salted or roasted nuts, no peanuts, but try a variety (all raw) including walnuts, macadamia, brazil, pecans and almonds. I get them at the health food store. I also am one of those weirdos who drinks 1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 Tablespoon of honey in a glass of water with my breakfast and also before I go to bed. I think this may help my systemic yeast problems more than weight loss but since I'm not sure why I am able to lose now and didn't use to, I thought I would include it. (you can read about this on the web. A guy named Bragg first suggested it.) You have the internet. I'm sure you have researched. Hopefully, you can find some "tricks" of your own to help you with your thyroid problems. My main advice is to not give up! Good luck. --Alice...See MoreThyroid nodules
Comments (7)After finding nodules on my thyroid during the ultrasound, my doc's nurse told me the blood thyroid results were in & normal. But my GYN said the TSH was borderline at .37. I don't know what all was tested, but I don't think it was a complete panel. Yet my doc's nurse said I needed to schedule a follow up with my doc to discuss the also normal radioactive scan & uptake results. They NEVER discuss normal results in person, just over the phone & that is that. So I went in & was told the results showed the nodules are cold. Now my doc's worried it's cancer but hubby thinks it's just hypothyroidism. But I need a biopsy. My doc may have me get an MRI or CT scan to check the parathyroid too. I had serum calcium & am awaiting those results. Perhaps all the stuff I've been complaining about over the years is due to hypothyroidism? I have so many of the symptoms that anyone can find on the internet. Every provider has only checked T3 & T4, & said they were normal, & treated me for different things. So they've only been looking at pieces of the puzzle versus putting them together for the big picture. GRRR Maybe now I need to start looking into hypothyroid medications for the best one(s) & not take what they give me just because it's cheap or readily available. Case in point, they want me to see an ENT versus an endocrinologist for the biopsy! I'm so sick & tired of military medicine!...See MoreMy old Boxer having siezures - I don't know what to do
Comments (46)I have an 8 year old Boxer, Millie, that had her first seizure just over a year ago. It was long and violent and tortuous to watch lasting well over 3 minutes. I immediately took her to the vet and he started her on Phenobarbital and Valium. She had several more smaller ones until the levels were where they needed to be. In the year since she's had dozens, some worse than others, and we've added Potassium Bromide to the mix. She continues to have small focal seizures lasting a few seconds almost daily. She was hospitalized last month with Pancreatitis. While there she had one larger and one smaller seizure. Since she's come home she seems to be deteriorating. She sleeps most of the days away. She has difficulty walking, stumbles or falls when she stands still for more than a few seconds, bumps into things and has fallen down the stairs. She seems to be losing control or strength in her hind legs. Last night she fell asleep at my feet and then couldn't stand or walk for a couple of minutes when she woke. This morning, on the other hand, she came as close to running as she has in a while to go outside and potty and play for a moment. It was brief. She's eating well, looks and sounds a good as ever which makes it that much harder to wonder "How much is enough for her?" I guess that's what I'm looking for, advice on "enough". She is our absolute favorite person in the world and is loved beyond measure. As terrified as I am about her leaving us, I am more afraid that she's suffering as she is. I've never had to even consider this for a pet so I'm lost to the rationale of it. How do you know when they've had enough?...See MoreSeizures in dogs
Comments (5)Two in a month is not 'rarely' by a long shot. Most of the time medication is recommended if 1) seizures are more often than every 2 months OR 2) seizures are so severe that the pet had a hard time recovering, OR 3) seizures lasted more than a few minutes. Even under the best of circumstances, in a younger dog like yours, seizures that are 'mild' or infrequent are often not treated because even with treatment, most epileptic dogs (and cats to some degree) continue to have seizures (though far less often.. sometimes never again). Our goal is to keep pets from having seizures less than once every 2 months... so if they are already having them less than that, we hesitate treatment as treatment is NOT benign. However blood work is ALWAYS recommended (and actually so are radiographs and ultrasounds- looking for an errant tumor that could somehow be involved). Hypothyroidism can be associated with an increased seizure frequency, but actual death from hypothyroidism is pretty rare (not seen a single case in 28 years as a vet). Hypothyroidism is associated with other illness problems as well (heart disease, joint disease, dermatologic problems, weight problems etc.), so correcting the lack of thyroid hormone is indeed recommended. If two seizures in a month is still considered 'rare' by your vet, I would agree, seek a second opinion. The longer frequent seizures go untreated, sometimes the harder they are to get control of....See Moresusanjf_gw
