When do I transfer seedlings to pots?
Comments (1)edlincoln - they need better light immediately. They are very etiolated. I've never used those peat pellet things but I suggest you cut off the netting and transplant into pots asap. As to what temperatures those plants can take I can't help you with specifics but for growing hardy outdoor plants indoors in the winter you need as much light as possible and temperatures as cool as the species can take, so I'd put them in the patio room if it were me. You might even need plant lights....See MoreJust transferred 2 air layered branches into pots. Questions
Comments (2)This is exactly how I do it. You are on the right track my friend. You've got plenty of time for further root growth before the dormant season. They'll do fine....See MoreCan I transfer into a larger pot??
Comments (3)Hi Jim, Welcome to GW. What zone are you in? That might make a difference on what you do with your plants. If you have a lot of growing season left, you may want to transplant your tomatoes and clip the blossoms off, they will flower again fairly soon. You will have later fruits but most likely more of it. Also that would give your plants time to climatize to their new homes and put some roots into the additional potting soil. Actually, I think I would do that even if you are in a shorter zone such as 5 or even 4. Here in zone 5 most of us are just now putting our plants into the ground, and many of us clip the blossoms (if there are some) so that the plant can concentrate on growing and adapting to its new location. Get your new container ready with enough soil in the bottom to raise the plant so that the lowest leaves are level with the top of the container. Water well so that the roots and potting medium hang together, remove it from the 3 gallon container, then set the root ball on the new potting medium, fill the container with more potting medium and water in adding more medium if needed. You could leave them in the 3 gallon containers, but I think you will be challenged to keep them adequately watered and their production may be much lower than they would be in a larger container. Comments (6)Put out you beets for sure and harden them off. And your cilantro too, if my beds of cilantro are any indication, you should be fine. By the few pounds of wild chives I picked today, you should be good to go with hardening that off too. And shoot, I just sow in the catnip and it grows like weeds.. But be sure to harden off any indoor started plant. I would say hold off with your basil and peppers for the moment. I'm a zone warmer than you and I'm pretty cautious about them because they are cold sensitive. Good news is we are looking at a rather nice warm trend for the next week or two and hardening them off shouldn't be a problem- but I would still keep them ready to pull back inside or be prepared to tent them against a chilly happening for the next couple of weeks....See Morekublakan
