Looking for Shade Tree - Fairly Small Backyard

I have been looking for a shade tree to plant in my backyard. I am planning on this being the largest tree and focal point of my backyard. Unfortunately, I don't have the largest backyard, so I'm having a tough time deciding on a tree. I live in hurricane-prone North Carolina (zone 8), and the tree will be planted about 20-30 feet from my house so I would like something very strong, yet moderate-fast growing.

I was thinking either an oak or a black gum tree. I would love a live oak, but I'm afraid the spread may be too big for the area. Also, I would prefer a tree that doesn't make a mess, as I will be putting in a patio soon that will be shaded by the tree. Below are a few pictures of the area I plan to plant it. In addition to this shade tree, I have a couple of ornamental trees (dogwoods, japanese maple) and plan on a privacy screen of Wintergreen Hetz and Crape Myrtles in the back along the fence.

I found this list on these forums, which may help. Anyone have any suggestions?
