I repost this periodically when someone asks about painting their cabinets. Lilymila, if your pantry feels rough, then not enough sanding occurred. ___________________________________ Here is how I would expect a pro to spray paint kitchen cabinets. A brush painted job would differ slightly in that you wouldn't hang the doors to paint. You'd place them on a work table or easel instead. It's time intensive work, and should take 7-14 days to accomplish completely and cost between 3K-7K depending on kitchen size and amount of detail in cabinets. Remove doors and drawer fronts. Remove hinges and hardware. Clean with TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) Rinse and let dry. Scrape any loose finish. Fill any damaged spots or hardware holes that won't be reused. Sand fill smooth. Scuff sand the rest. Tack off dust. Hang in dust free paint booth with wires through hardware points. Tack off dust again. Spray with alkyd based primer. Scuff sand again. Tack off dust. Spray with second coat of primer. Spray with first finish coat of latex enamel. Spray with second coat of latex. If glazing is to occur, that is next. Spray with conversion varnish. (If being brush painted, this step is typically skipped.) Add more molding or decorative details to boxes, filling nail holes and sanding smooth. Repeat prep process with face frames and exposed cabinet sides using plastic to create a spray booth on site. If interiors are to be done, they are done before face frames and sides. Interiors are difficult, and add both time and expense to the job. Allow everything to fully cure. Clean hinges and hardware and clear coat if you're keeping the old hardware. Install new (or old) hinges and hardware. Re-install doors and drawers and adjust for proper clearances. If you are receiving a job without this amount of effort, then you are not receiving a quality professional job.

My take on bread drawer covers is that they work similarly to breathable bags-i.e. paper bags or the stiff plastic bags covered with perforations. They allow some ventilation so that the bread stays crusty but limits the ventilation so that bread will go stale more slowly than it would out on the counter. Bread stored in regular plastic bags can be kept anywhere---the moisture trapped by the plastic takes away any crustiness whether the bread is stored in bread box, on counter or in fridge. We have a bread drawer cover (it's plastic with 2 ventilation finger holes). I don't think the cover is doing any more than the closed drawer is already--decreasing air flow but allowing some ventilation. Since we have inset cabinets we have a bit of an airgap around the drawer allowing for some air circulation. I wonder if overlay drawers allow enough air circulation either with or without drawer covers. Maybe the volume of the drawer is large enough so that any trapped moisture won't make the bread soft.

It's worth it to replace them.

I have a host of things and I don't know what cushy cupboards is but if it is a soft rubber liner that you can trim to the size of the drawer base, then that is a definite minimum requirement - and may well be all you need. An example is the blue rubber liner I have in - most of mine are clear but for some reason I picked up one blue roll. Good thing because a picture with the clear stuff doesn't look like anything at all. In the picture above you can see some the nibs dotting the surface that give that rubber mat some texture, create friction and keep things from sliding. I've used that at the base of all the drawers - and in the pots and pans that's all I've got. I got mine from both IKEA and Williams Sonoma - both have the good quality ones that I liked. The "Container Store" has some which I did buy but I wouldn't recommend them - too slippery, not enough friction, waste of money and the effort to measure and trim them! For the dishes drawer, I've used the (clear) rubber mat above and . The smaller bowls stay put on the mat just fine - you can see them at the far end of drawer. I've also used dividers as in holligator's link, where I store my cleaning supplies and trash bags and such - didn't want the bona floor liquid or the tin of BKF spilling. Obviously no rubber mat needed here though. If you're looking at dividers, I rather like for separating and snugly holding up bottles of cooking oil, vinegar, molasses etc. I know you're asking about dishes, but since you're looking at drawer dividers, I thought I'd mention it.
