Angie, The Rue doesn't work with the darned felines! I've got that and I have them coming down into THAT section of the butterfly garden as well. Jill, You're right! Here I was thinking it was something viral or bacterial since it LOOKED that way and I just couldn't figure it out (that oozing was so nasty!!! EEEEUW!). When the West Coast Ladies (Vanessa annabella) died then it was the 'a-ha!' that got me REALLLLLLY digging deeper for the culprit. Oh well. You learn something new each day. I've used DE before without such tragic consequences before so it may just be the combination. I don't know. I'll be sure that the stuff is not used anywhere NEAR any of the butterfly plants.

Congrats on your male pipevine swallowtail! I've been releasing a lot of pipevine swallowtails recently - I just have two chrsyalides left - most of which were males, but at least three, maybe four, were females, and I haven't seen the females around, just lots of males. I was so hoping for more eggs and cats! Anyway, your aristolochia looks like A. macrophylla to me, but since they all look very much alike, I can't say for sure. If they bloom, then you'll be able to narrow it down to A. macrophylla/A. tomentosa if the flowers are the typical little "Dutchman's pipes" - I can't remember for sure what A. gigantea flowers look like, but by the name, I'd guess they're big. My A. macrophyllas haven't grown too fast either, although one of them is finally taking off. My A. tomentosas are huge, though. 'Just wish I had some babies! Sherry

Thanks Jon. That vine struggle for several years but when the thevetia behind it grew big enough to give it good shade, it really took off. Also, I backed off on watering it (thinking it was about dead) and it seems happy with low water. Go figure. It's very frost sensitive so the branches took a hit over the winter but it's putting out new growth now. I've never seen any caterpillars, or caterpillar damage, on the leaves but I did see a beautiful butterfly the other day, large yellow and black. I'll have to Google swallowtail and see if that is it. This plant came to me via a nursery in Ventura when a friend traveled up that way and brought it back for me.
