does anyone in the us grow the Purple Lodge rose

I saw this over on the helpmefind website. It says it has been introduce to France and Germany... does that mean it is not in the US. Sorry if that is a silly question. I am just trying to figure it out.

According to the sources listed in the HMF "buy from" tab, the only nurseries selling it are all in Europe.

Yes. :-) But mine is only in it's second year so I can't tell you all that much about it. It's a Rugosa hybrid and, unlike the standard Rugosas, it is prone to getting Black Spot in these parts -- it did so last year. I'll let mine mature and see how it behaves, but that doesn't give you the info you need now. *IF* it behaves more like some of the other purple Rugosas, such as Roseraie de l'Hay and Hansa, then it will repeat well if it gets a good haircut after it blooms. I use hedge trimmers on my other Rugosas and they love it. The blooms are a pretty reddish purple -- so far more purple than red -- and are very fragrant. Still, there's that BS thing, so it doesn't look too promising. If you go with one of the other Rugosas mentioned above, then I can highly recommed them, as they don't get diseased in these parts. But they do get large, which is ok in my too-open yard. Roseraie de l'Hay is particularly big and makes a bold statement when in bloom -- it's more like a tree in its growth, vigor, and behavior -- not very much like what we normally picture when we think of a rose. I hope you get some better answers, but thought I should point out the experience with BS. If you are in a less humid zone 7 it may work out well for you. All the best, Deb

Min, I did it myself. It took a summer of evenings. Mikey would bring his book and sit out there and read for an hour while I laid two or three "cells" in sand. It cost us a few hundred dollars for extra bricks- the rest of it was rubble laying around on the property, broken concrete and bits of tile and flagstone, and left-over cement from other projects that we poured into sour cream and yogurt cups or square wood forms. I had one gopher under it- he did not live to tell the tale, and I had to re-do that "cell." A few old concrete slabs under there from bygone sheds and rental shacks foils most gophers, I think. It's an easy and fun thing to do, and the ground does not have to be level, and you can start and stop whenever you like. It requires no skill and very little money. Exactly my kind of project! Renee

Susan, you're a kindred spirit! Belle de Crecy is gorgeous. I've been giving away roses right and left as I downsize the total number and then filling in with a few more historic purples. If I don't reign myself in, my whole rose garden will be purple! Jeri, thank you for the photos and background. I have Christopher's book, too. I'll have to pull it out to read before bed tonight. It's been a long time. I wonder if "Red Runaround," "Brooks Purple," and 'Hippolyte' of commerce are one and the same. "Red Run" looks like a Gallica/China cross? Paul Barden mentions that "Brooks" may be "Red Run." I wonder if I'll get a "Red Run" or "Brooks" if I order a 'Hippolyte' from Rogue Valley Roses. I should try to locate all three and compare them!

So, I sent a note to Pat, we'll see what she says. Desertgarden, believe me, as somebody who makes a lot of her income (such as it is) off of intellectual property rights, I would never DREAM of taking part in anything that doesn't respect the rights of the hybridizer! But I agree with Cori Ann that basically, I have no understanding of how this all works, and I bet Pat does. She may say "this is not possible" in which case, end of story. But who knows, she may say "oh, sure, one just has to do x, y, and z, and then we're good to go!." Which would be really nice. For me, living in rrd country, I always get nervous when a rose I love is not readily available! But also, I'd like to see lots of other people who want this rose get a chance to grow it (because if you are on the east coast, anyhow, shipping from Arizona is WAY expensive!)

The site wouldn't work for me so I emailed them and they said they have it in stock. $26.99 plus fed ex shipping plus tax.

Also tax should only be charged if the seller has a physical presence in the state and the buyer is a resident of same state.
