Removing wax finish from new rustic furniture to stain the top

hi there,

we're about to purchase a couple desks from our local rustic furniture store. they're natural colored solid pine with a "wax" finish. i'm not sure what type of wax.

here's a pic:

i'd like to stain the top a darker color.

can you recommend either a product to deepen the color of top without removing the wax, or recommend the best way to get all the wax off so i can just stain the top as though it were raw, unfinished wood?

we're not placing our order until we can wrap our heads around the feasibility.

thanks so much!!
