Bug eating my pepper plants. What to do?
Comments (7)I don't really get the square foot garden mixture. I don't think peat moss and vermiculite offer much in the way of nutrients, and in high concentrations are going to dry out fast. I've been filling my beds with what a local quarry calls "veggie mix", which I think is a mix of top soil and compost and maybe something else. But a reputable quarry in your area is going to provide the best soil mixture for growing, IMO. I top my beds off with it every couple years. Alternate years, I throw in composted steer manure, and I continually turn it into the clay soil underneath to get the mixture deeper and deeper every year. Rarely do I fertilize during the growing season, I only water every few days, even when temps get up in the 90's, and I get good results. When it comes time to top off your beds with new soil, I would really consider trying something different. You might find you don't have to water so much and will get better results....See Morebug eating my new orange tree leaves!
Comments (8)I'll add that it's a BABY caterpillar! Just wait until you see what they grow up to be, lol! Of course, the bigger they are allowed to become, the more they will eat. These caterpillars, though disguised exceedingly well as a big gooey bird dropping, are a favorite treat of predatory animals (including wasps). I've not noticed that birds ignore them while they are still caterpillars...I guess that disguise works too well. However, once they pupate, birds really go after the chrysalises. I agree with Malcolm. Remove these insects by hand. They don't sting. And look for single, round, pearl-like eggs deposited on the upper side of leaves. They can be removed, too. I grow seedling citrus in containers strictly for the pleasure of watching the life cycle of the Giant Swallowtails. The gorgeous adults are plentiful in a blooming annual and perennial garden where they will nectar upon a wide range of flowers. Comments (2)Hard to tell from the photos. Until you figure it out, try spraying the plant with insecticidal soap, store bought or home made (see link below). It won't hurt the plant and may help keep the pests at bay. It may also cure the problem? Comments (3)It looks like Flea Beetle damage. Keep an eye out for tiny black hopping beetles. They are very fast. The link below has a few options for control(did a quick web search). I have found nasturtiums to be a good trap crop. Here is a link that might be useful: flea beetle control...See Moredigdirt2
