Hi everyone! I was part of Beacon Light Products, the company that invented and manufactured these products. The company has been gone for many years now. This product, Bulb Boss, was an amazing feat of engineering. It was sold under our own name and packaging as well as with our marketing partner Angelo Brothers (Abco) as shown in the photo on this thread. The electronics inside the little brass cup module were absolutely cutting edge and took electronic surface mounted chips to new levels of performance. I continue to hear stories of people who have these devices still in use today, some 20 years later. I actually think that I still have a couple somewhere in a dusty box of memories of things that should have changed the world but didn't, We took to market 5 products: a 4 level dimmer, 10 and 30 minute timers, a Nightlight, and an Emergency Flasher. The technology was also built directly into incandescent bulbs and sold by us as well as ABCO and Philips called "SmartBulbs". (Smart before everything else used the term). I see today, that Philips has a multi level LED bulb out... perhaps some of that original Beacon Technology lives on! Brandie, I still have a few of the 30 minute modules. "LED candelabra bulbs" Except most are as ugly as sin. Only the top half is 'bulb.' The bottom half is the power supply. Horrible looking if you have clear glass hurricanes.

To follow on Bus's comment, heat is proportional to wattage. I would expect that any combination of lamps summing to the maximum specified (in this case 120 watts) would be safe. An interesting side comment : a single 120 watt lamp (if such a creature existed) would produce more light than two 60 watt lamps. All other things being equal, the higher wattage lamp is more efficient at producing light. Check the lumens/Watt ratings of various wattages of 120 volt, standard service bulbs, to see what I mean. If you want to be really safe (and save some money on electricity in the bargain), fit a screw-in compact fluorescent. It will produce much less heat for a given amount of light.
