Oxygen Bleach/Sodium Percarbonate Reaction to Enzymes
Comments (10)Enzymes are not stable in laundry liquid products that contain bleach (oxgyen or chlorine), powdered laundry products are fine as chemical & detergent makers have found ways to keep one from affecting the other the shelf. Long as the product is kept in a cool and dry storage location things should be fine. Liquid laundry products by and large do contain enzymes but not bleach for this reason. The only exception are the various "pod" type products where ways have been found to seal off the bleach from enzymes to keep each from affecting the other. As for oxygen bleach and water temperature in general yes the hotter the water equals better results. However that mainly pertains to sodium perborate and liquid hydrogen peroxide. Sodium percarbonate OTOH is known as the "cold water" oxygen bleach because it can and will start working in cooler water. Personally have used either sodium percarbonate containing detergents or added it as a powder (Ecover) to laundry washed at temps of either 85F or 100F and the results are same; stains are soils are removed with textiles whitened and brightened. Ecover makes two versions of oxygen bleach by the way. One comes in plastic jugs and is liquid oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide) the other is a power (sodium percarbonate). Compared to "OxiClean" type products the latter is a better buy because it contains pure oxygen bleach. The others are usually 10% or more of washing soda....See MoreOxygen Bleaches
Comments (10)iasheff: thanks for your link. Very interesting article and nice that they actually listed and linked all those products. I've been using BiOKleen as my dishwasher detergent for years now and it's very effective, doesn't take much and doesn't smell up the kitchen. Have only used borax as a bleach. With asthma I get attacks triggered by a lot of traditional commercial products. But now I see a toilet bowl cleaner listed that's based on oxygen bleach. That I'll definitely try....See MoreOxygen Bleach Liquid or Powder?
Comments (8)I really hope I don't come off as rude as I answer this, but I have no idea why some people on here assume that I'm trying to do market research or whatever it is. I've answered this before several times on other posts. I post to simply ask questions about different cleaning products. I ask for my OWN information and not for a corporation. I honestly don't know what's wrong with that. I'm honestly just curious about these things. Also I find it entertaining to post things on here to get people talking. There doesn't seem to be any other platforms that I know of quite like this one where there is an entire space dedicated for these specific topics. So I figured why not post these things on here? I really hope that clears things up in terms of my motives. I assure you once again that I am NOT here to promote any products or do ANY research for ANY corporation. I'm just here to learn and to be informed. Hopefully others down the road will benefit from the wealth of knowledge that comes from the good people of this forum who kindly take the time to answer questions. By the way, Happy Memorial Day 😊🇺🇸...See MoreHow to use ammonia, oxygen bleach, and detergent together in laundry?
Comments (4)Limiting to 2 tablespoons of detergent is not a hard-fast rule. Depends on a myriad of factors including water hardness, soil level, load size, amount of water (a deep-fill Bulky cycle will reasonably take more detergent than a low-HE fill level cycle). Ammonia, detergent of any type, and Biz powder surely can be combined, but DO NOT put the powder into a detergent dispenser with any liquids. Put the powder product(s) directly into the tub and liquids in the dispenser. Dosing sudsy ammonia (vs. non-sudsy) can be tricky because of the sudsing factor, which is less controllable than detergent sudsing. Biz can also promote some sudsing. Biz can be used alone, it has some function as a detergent, I've done that a couple times on pillows or items that need a blast of stain treatment. Not unusual that I use 4 tablespoons of Biz plus detergent for a super-grungy load, or more Biz than that for a Biz-only blast treatment. I find that a temp of 120°F to 125°F and up does the trick for me on pillow cases darkened from sweaty/oily hair. I don't have any down-filled items ... but I washed a friend's down comforter a couple times. The last time, several years ago (before she died), I blasted it with oxy-bleach (I hadn't yet rediscovered Biz at the time) and HOT water, twice. It came out white. I thought it was a cream color, had never seen it white. She said it was originally white. She was a heavy smoker ......See MoreUser
