How can I get onions year round -- if spring planted ones drown?

So, as many others have had, we've had rain almost daily for the past month, and my onion crop has many of the tops rotting and falling over before really bulbing.

Any ideas as to how to keep from (horrors!) having to buy onions at the store if I end up with too few storage onions? I've thought of succession planting sets and using the green onions to conserve the storage ones. Also, just read on another post about overwintering onion seed that can be planted in August and bulb in May and early June (can they survive z5 winter under cover? temps go sub zero F). Any favorite types of these?

Any other ideas appreciated!
