Building a Home

Fence for house and dogs....wrap around porch.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place or not...but we are just about to start building this home. We live in the country and will have a home with a pretty big front yard, about 200 ft. off the road. The back yard I want quainter and fence in a little spot for the dogs. I have one I never let out without a leash cause he is a car chaser when he gets a chance. Rascally thing. With the wrap around porch how can I fence it all in that will look good? we are not planning on having porch rails and porch will be cement and level to ground

"Little spot" -- you're thinking about a pen/dog run? It doesn't need to be right next to the house. If it's important that the dogs be able to go in and out on their own, I'd have the fenced area located so the dog door is on the garage. Good luck!

Do you want the dogs on the porch? Then I would fence in the brown lines, so they can access the porch and back of the house, but add a gate so you can move from back porch to side porch.

If you want to access this area from the garage, move left to the green line. Hopefully this gives you some possibilities :)

Also, just a quick idea....if you want easier access from master bedroom to laundry and porch, without going through main living areas.

I have a red brick Bungalow with white trim around the eaves and white pillars out front. I built a 5 ft. white picket fence around the front yard (I have two huge dogs to keep in). My eldest son & I built a white arbor and gate that leads out to my Japanese Koi pond/garden. I planted English Ivy that has grown up on the arbor and under the cedars down on the front and up on the brick columns of the front porch. I have yellow Lady Banks roses growing up onto the front porch. The front door is Christmas red and the shutters on either side are my favorite green. My back yard is where my best cottage gardens are located as the front yard is too hot and too dry in summer and the dust boils up off the road, but I have evergreen landscape plants and roses and a huge, ancient lilac bush. I have Spring bulbs and grow Garden Phlox and in mid-Spring there are tall Larkspurs with deep blue spires. White flowering Bridle's Wreath and yellow flowering Forsythia grows along the fence row with pink and white fairy roses and Red Blaze climbing roses on the fence, and whatever else I can poke in there to fill in spaces. I have to rebuild my fence this year and paint it (ugh), but I love the look of an abandoned, ancient garden that has overgrown its boundaries and has run a muck! I like it, and that's what counts as far as I am concerned. The link below shows how my yard changes every year. A couple of quick thoughts: 1) If I were you, I would explore what it takes to get your "earnest money" back. Your best leverage is the willingness to walk away from the deal. 2) You should not allow yourself to be held financially responsible for their realtor's mistakes. 3) The rush to have you make decisions is a calculated (or at least well practiced) attempt to get you to make mistakes and agree to things you wouldn't otherwise. 4) You should require your realtor to stand up for your interests rather than (hint, she'll do more if you threaten to walk away from the deal) 5) If you go through with the deal, I would strongly suggest a pre-drywall inspection. I would have little confidence the builder isn't cutting corners on the build. 5) This sounds like a crappy situation with numerous bad actors (the builder, the realtor(s), and likely the subcontractors working on your home), but to get an acceptable outcome, you need to take ownership of the situation. 6) If you're enough of a pain, stand up for your rights, talk about a pre-drywall inspection, lawyers to force builder to perform, they will likely be willing to give your deposit back.

Put them in a shady area if possible and in the most inconspicuous place. Of course placement might be determined by where the furnace is located and where the HVAC people feel is the most efficient placement. To blend ours in we will put some type of bushes around it. Some people surround them with small fences, I personally don't like that, I think that draws more attention to it.

Love having a peek at your homes and gardens. Here are two views from the woodhouse , our main home. First is the backyard. The fence was installed by our new neighbor. I know it was installed with the wrong side facing me. Recently removing trees that were unhealthy or too close to the house has given me the opportunity to revise the gardens and hardscape. Thus new garden area is a work in progress. We have a grass lawn there now for the first time in 40 years. Unfortunately, now the hostas get too much afternoon sun. I planted the black eyed susans yesterday. I hope they deter the deer. This photo is facing out to the front from my kitchen window. I love this plant my daughter gave me for Mother's Day.

are you opposed to electric fencing? we have used the wireless one when we had a short-term rental in the country, it worked well. our dog never got shocked, we did the training to keep her away from the perimeter and she is very responsive to training. We have family who actually installed an electric fence inside the house and outside when they built. It ran in the house so that the dogs could be in the kitchen/garage/outside but not cross to the living room/bedrooms. That was over 10 years ago and they are still very happy with that solution. They live in country near highway and have a breed that loves to chase and is not easily restrained with traditional fence. I would think you could run it under the porch and then to block off the area you want. This solution really depends on your dog breed and where you stand on this type of fencing method, but might be something to consider if a traditional fence doesn't work well for you.

Farm- Good idea! I've thought about something like that for our property....but we have neighbor dogs that wouldn't be slowed down by the electric fence.
