Kitchen Appliance Recommendation
Comments (4)The consensus here is that American Range is a good choice but Bluestar is a better choice. If going with American Range then the Performer Series is the way to go. Things that I don't like about AR include their double burner grate. A one burner grate is heavy enough to lift and clean. Double burner pro-style grates are very heavy. The only AR that does not have this is the step up range. That is just a silly gimmick. The other thing I don't like is the black coated cooktop surface. IMO difficult to clean. Much easier to clean cast iron or just let the small stuff patina over. I have never baked in the double convection oven offered by AR. I imagine it can't be worse than standard pro style gas oven. DCS fridges are rebadged Whirlpool/KitchenAid fridges. Usually good but not best in class. DCS ranges were considered very good before they were bought out by Fisher Paykel but seem to have suffered a bit lately. There is really nothing particularly innovative here. They do offer an All-Gas model with self-clean but the simmer is 140 /~750 btu and it is above your stated limit of $4.5k. Capital offers a Culinarian with self-clean, 23k btu very even heat burners that go down to 145 degrees plus one small pot burner that goes down to 500 btu. no development in a while They have developed quite a bit lately. In the Platinum Series.25k btu burners, true European convection, and quick preheat. And in the larger models they offer French plates and double griddles, and French doors. In 30" they offer standard grates that convert to wok grates, copper and different metal finishes, all the colors in the RAL color book including custom color knobs. In my perfect world I would add self-clean and heavy duty motorized rotisserie to the Bluestar Platinum Series like in the Capital Culinarian plus the knob bezels that light on when a burner is on like Dacor. But nobody makes that perfect range....See MoreWhen do you NEED Pro-Style Appliances?
Comments (12)Edlakin you're correct. We would be renting it out to people in our community or others outside when available. They can then hire their own caterers for the event, or the renters can use the kitchen themselves if they want. This is not intended to rent to caterers as a kitchen for their business purposes. Cooksnews. You're church experience is good learning. Existing vs. remodel codes didn't even enter my mind. We're a community of only 800 people, BUT we're actually a City. We'll have to look into that 'cause you never know what's buried in city code-- our "city council" is ever changing, so no one is extremely well-versed in the details Benefits and drawbacks always!!!! I didn't know there were commercial ranges out there that are not gas. We maybe should think about those. I know that we have gas hook up there, but it hasn't been used in 20 years. Who knows what condition it's in. Overall, tho....it seems I'm hearing -- outside of ci lantro, who is prob right that there will be those wanting spaghetti dinners --commercial or pro-style isn't a "must have" from a catering point of view. It might be more the external issues....codes, how much renovation to make commercial work [moving cabinets, etc.]. Thanks....See MoreWife dislikes Pro/Commercial Appliances
Comments (6)But...why does it bother you if she's so happy? Was it supposed to be your kitchen and it got hijacked? The KA SS are pretty squared off and flat, so have some of that industrial flavor while still being home appliances. I think it's a good compromise, frankly. Some pro appliances are actually homier and prettier than what you got, but most aren't particularly pretty. There are a lot of residential appliances that are curvier and homier than what you got. If she's cooking and baking so much she might like to work in pretty environment :) The style for professional appliances started with a combination of the industrial loft housing boom, with exposed structural brick and ductwork, combined with the ability to get more power for less money. That doesn't sound like the style of your home. Kitchen Aid is a good brand. The appliances should work. Your wife is "real happy". Maybe she likes her Lexus and Porsche because she thinks they're the best cars, and prettiest, not just pricey and showy....See MoreBest value appliance package (pro style)
Comments (6)No packages. Nobody makes great in every class. Packages lock you into a bad choice with a good choice. Except with Viking, it locks you into all bad choices so the salesperson can earn a big spiff. Pick the best in class that you can afford for every category. A pro style range requires a pro style ventilation system that includes Make Up Air. Appliance sales people also conveniently forget to tell you to budget as much for ventilation as for the range, and you get blindsided when you find out its needed. Read up on here about some brand basics and really assess how you cook, and how you want to cook when the project is done. A good Kitchen Designer should be advising you with the hundreds of decisions that you have ahead of you. Good luck!...See Moregeekman
