Bellmont 1900 series sample door is here!
Comments (7)Well, it took longer than expected to get the door, so the order went in a while ago and that makes it my final choice, lol! Actually, the cabinets might be here in about 2 weeks (!!!!!) so we can inspect and reorder anything damaged/incorrect and still hit our 5/13 install date. Demo is 4/29. I'm happy with it. I feel so much better now that I've seen the color on maple in a bigger piece than the sample chip. It's not blotchy, which was a concern, so I'm very relieved! It also feels solid and stable. The inside corners of the rails and stiles meet very tight and neatly. It feels very smooth. The sides are all flush where the joints are. Aything else I should check?...See MoreWho has (or is planning) a vintage kitchen?
Comments (34)We are pursueing an unusual route. We have what was a somewhat grandish 1882 home that is a mixture of Second Empire and Eastlake. Typical for the time, the back rooms (including the kitchen) were not finished to anywhere near the standard of the front (public) rooms. All the trim, moldings, floorings, hardware etc are/were several grades lower. Trying to recreate such a kitchen would seem fun for a museum, but not practical for the 21st century. And trying to create a muddle left us uninspired. Then we asked ourselves this question: What if, in 1882, they valued and utilized their kitchens as we do today? What if the kitchen was meant to be public and just as grand as the rest of the house? What would it have looked like? That question now forms our basis for design. We found the drawing below for a great ceiling and were able to order a replica, which we finally got installed about a month ago (lots of work!). We will do the floor in the Victorian style tiles from the Tile-Source. This week my wife is applying Venetian Plaster to the walls from Vasariplaster in BM August Morning, so that covers the large surfaces. The cabinets I am building and designing myself (thank God for Sketchup!), and they will be highly ornamental in the original Aesthetic Movement style, with no toe kicks and inset doors, ect. Crown Point has been an inspiration, but we are taking the design a lot further than they do in really trying to recreate period furniture/cabinet design. The idea is that upon viewing a person might reasonably think the cabinets are original to the house, with the exception that such cabinets were not built in kitchens at the time. It's all a bit risky, but it is exciting and we have our fingers crossed! Here is a link that might be useful: Tile Source...See MoreChoosing kitchen cabinets
Comments (5)The ones I have are 16 years old an thermafoil. They became warped and peeled within 1 year. Unfortunately we didn't know the right questions to ask 16 years ago. Now I'm asking a ton. I'm sure there better cabinets are probably great. Thermafoil cabinets are horrible. Our kitchen isn't that big - 14 x 14 and we paid $13,000 for cabinets that were crappy back then. Are there any sites that rate the actual quality of different cabinet mfgs? I was thinking about going with Kraft Maid - they've been around for so long and I love the color selection....See MoreBill V. - Help! Is Laticrete 1600 grout OK? Please say yes...
Comments (9)I know it's an old thread, but I just have to say that it still it has been incredibly helpful to me with my own current reno with the grout/tile job! I learned some important things from buffalotinas dilemma, & from Bill_V and others advice! We had an almost identical close call today when the tile store handed my husband the wrong Laticrete grout instead of the one we had preordered. They handed him the same 'Laticrete 1600 Grout in Silver Shadow' that buffalotina's contractor mistakenly used. When we had actually orderd 'Laticrete Permacolor Grout in Silver Shadow' My Hubby didn't notice that they gave him the wrong grout until he drove back home today. Thankfully eventually I noticed it was the wrong type of grout on my own. After noticing it said the word 'unsanded' on the box {Permacolor wouldn't say sanded or unsanded} & the word 'Permacolor' was no where at all to be found on the box of this 1600 grout, plus the box said to add 'enhancer' and I already knew that Permacolor states clearly not to mix it with anything but water. It was very obvious this was not the grout we had ordered. So right back to the store Hubby went & they exchanged it for the correct Permacolor Silver Shadow grout, the one they should have given us in the first place. Funny though because the first time around they originally charged us on the bill for 'Permacolor' but had actually given my husband '1600'??!! So many of our problems & delays with this reno are due to incompetence & errors made by workers doing the job wrong or badly & also store employees messing up orders, not to mention defective merchandise from the cabinet company. I can certainly relate to you buffalotina when you said that your reno almost killed you! --ours has certainly sucked a year of my life out of me! A bunch more of new white hairs have sprouted and appeared this year --coincidence?? NO. I learned from buffalotinas dilemma that it is important I ask installers not to put caulk on top of grout & only use caulk alone at the joining area between countertop & tile. I was reminded that it is not good for the installers to use 'mastic', but that they should use the 'thinset '.I will make sure they use thinset or I won't let them install the tile!! Thank you for vicariously helping me by learning from your reno & Bill V you have been especially helpful!!!...See More_sophiewheeler
