Historic house and estate sale

Here is a historic house I went through the other day for an estate sale. I happened to have a meeting near there one of the open house days. The coolest thing is pretty much everything you see in the photos, you can buy! I didn't want anyone to miss out if they really wanted any of this stuff. Yes, some of the woodwork was painted. Love the foyer. The house does have some peeling wallpaper and other structural issues that are not apparent in the photos. It is under contract. This is a pretty economically depressed area after all the mills closed, so you can get a great house for next to nothing. This whole street is full of great homes that have been bought by people who love old homes, particularly people who don't have kids. It's not too bad for me for work location, but well over an hour for DH.

Hmm, I can see all the photos no problem. Pop up blocker? I use Google chrome if that makes any difference.

Ginny, there was much more unusual stuff the previous week at Gore Place Plant sale. In both sales they did import plants from outside growers. Gore Place definitely had the better prices than Lyman Estates but Lyman Estates had a discount for members so may be this was why the prices were higher. The Gore Plant sale had a list of the plants on their website they offered at the sale so this was a nice feature to see if there was anything you wanted. To give you an idea, here is what I got at Gore Place: Albutilon 'melon sorbet' Sage 'Pineapple' Begonia 'Baby Wing Pink' Begonia hiemalis 'Solenia' Begonia tuberhybrida 'Illumination Apricot' Coleus saber Cuphea ignea 'Firecracker plant' Ipomea batatas (light green shade of potato vine) Dahlia Variabilis 'Redskin' Craspedia globosa 'Drumstick' And 2 other plants. All for $40. The plants were all healthy and most in 3 or 4" round pots. At the Lyman Estates I bought a Stars and Strips Penta, an unusual heuchera (1 Gallon) and a mint herb for $18. I was happy with these prices since I had been looking for that variety of Penta and haven't seen any of these except through mail order. In both cases the plant sales support the non profit causes that I am happy to support and the plants I got were healthy and well cared for. Sue

Maybe I'm the only one who gets what the ad is saying. It's not saying that the house is beautiful, it's saying that it's in great original condition... that a family who cannot afford a $400k+ house on southern salaries could live in this house without it falling down around their ears. Sure, it may not have the "latest and greatest" but not everyone can afford that. It means that the previous owners took such good care of it that you can live in it as is. I know for many people that would be a horror but it looks pristine and functional as it is... a rare find. Generally you find things that are complete disasters and NEED a lot of money in work or you're paying for someone else's updates. I've heard the term "beautiful condition" used many times in used furniture, jewelry, etcetc. It means that even though it is xx years old, it's been well taken care of and doesn't have the wear and tear you'd expect for something its age.

Chickadee2, I live in Birchrunville! The Cafe is a huge foodie restaurant(egullet loves them) and well worth the wait time.(People come from all over, mostly NYC for the Chef's menu...it's very cool to see the gazillions of various wines opened to try with each course. I feel so pedestrian bringing a single bottle of red:) ) The homes here are beautiful, you can still get a rare old beauty for around 300,000 without much land. But saying that, there's far more approaching 1 million to 4million. B'ville is very much a hidden secret, but it's a place where the hunt still goes off several times a week, hot air balloons fly over, carriages with matched horses share the road with walkers and bikes, people making stone sculptures randomly, and the denizens make british people look far less charming and eccentric:) I'm attaching a link to a realtor who has some B'ville property. "I just know it's probably from the 1940's & most likely costume jewelry." You may be able to get big bucks for the stuff. Bakelite and Lucite vintage jewelry is quite collectible. Certain styles of the era are popular even it it is not true Bakelite. Google some of the places that sell it online and contact them. I would try to get another estate sale company in to go through things and see if there are any items worth it to be put up for auction. Do not rely on just that one estate sale company to give you advice. Way back when..........when my grandfather died, my mother did a bunch of rummage sales. It barely put a dent in the amount of stuff my grandfather had saved like a packrat. (Depression Era guy.) Then, my mom had someone come in to look at the stuff. This auction woman pawed through the stuff and found some valuable stuff that had gone unrecognized. For instance, my grandfather had a shoebox full of pens he had saved. My mom had put 50 cents on it for the rummage sales. No one bought it. The auction woman found a pen in there called *Big Red* from the late '20s and it sold at auction for a LOT of money. (This was before they reissued the reproductions) A little plastic box turned out to be an Art Deco celluloid cigarette holder. $$$$. A can opener was vintage Harley Davidson issue. It was sent to a store out East on consignment and fetched a pretty penny. I could go on and on. My point being that you could have treasure trove of collectibles. If you do not have the time or the knowledge of collectibles, have someone come in to look over the stuff again. There are places who will list things on eBay for you for a percentage of what it sells for. One persons junk is another man's treasure. My one cousin is always on the lookout at sale for old rusty, vintage tools she uses for decoration. She just cringes when at estate sales she is told "Oh yeah, we had a lot of old tools. They were all rusty and beat up, so we threw them out before the sale." Some things are only valuable to certain individuals. When my uncle died, there was an old, floor model radio in nice wood cabinet. My brother removed the guts from it and was going to use the nice Art Decor cabinet. Another cousin (who is into vintage radios) went ballistic finding this out, as it turns out the vacuum tubes that were tossed out and hauled away in the dumpster, were valuable to collectors who use them to recondition old radios, and worth waaaaay more that that crappy cabinet was. BTW, if there is a lot of stuff Goodwill and similar organizations will come to your house to pick everything up. They will give you a receipt for taxes.

What a pretty house, with so much potential. It's really quite nice as is, even the kitchen. Lots of wallpaper to remove, who knows what is behind it :-) Love the stairways and the sleeping porch!

There are several nice pieces for the estate sale. Wish I wasn't on the other side of the country, sounds like fun!!

Me too Spring, I never use my pc, and the sites that try to force me to use their apps drive me nuts! It makes me say NO YOU CAN'T FORCE ME!! I'D RATHER NOT SEE THE DAMN PICTURES THAN DOWNLOAD YOUR STUPID APP!!!! (ahhhh, that feels better) :c)

no, a pop up comes up and won't let you pass without downloading the app. Even when you click the "no thank you" option it just sits there.

We were in that area again today for the Ag and Art Tour. I forgot to mention that the only thing I saw different the other day was the carport in the back was gone.

Thank you for sharing. I love estate sales but when I go to them I usually end up feeling sad.

Yes, can be sad, but it is better for the items to go to a new home where they are appreciated. In one of the estate sales, the person who passed was nearly 100 and her "kids" were late 60's and 70's. They didn't want/need all these items either. The estate auction company does a great job cataloging and organizing the items.

Kswl, when I was there, the carport was down. I wound up not bidding on anything though there were a couple of small items I would have liked. The problem is having a place to display them.

We decided to take a road trip to the house. We live 2 hours away in NC.
As of Sunday afternoon, the carport was still there. We drove under it as we left.
We met the daughter of the owner. She was absolutely delightful!
Her mother passed away at 103 in 2013.
She said her mother was smiling down at the fact that a new family was buying her home.
I did a search and found Anne Pickens Collins obituary.
She was one amazing woman!

That's great. Too funny about the carport, but I parked in the front, but how did i miss it, LOL.

I decided not to as it would have been too much trouble to pick up the items.
I LOVED the chandelier in the foyer!
