Check on the Wye raspberry. This is a complete parentage of Red Raspberry and Blackberry crosses. It is similar to the Tay berry in its character. But it carries better winter hardiness, and fluctuating temperatures. Yield and flavor are very good. Berries are large conical shape, firm and well filled. Core stays in the berry similar to blackberry species, but color is deep red like the red raspberry types. The taste is more in likeness to the red raspberry, but has hints of boysenberry in its flavor. WYE BERRY will out yield standard raspberry

Sure hope I like that 2009 planted 30' bed of Carolines this year, if not, I'm blaming everbody here who recommended them ;-) Meanwhile, the other 30' bed with 1/2 in Heritage and the other in Latham and Royalty will just have to do. Don't worry, I'll survive somehow. Oh, the Heritage are fine by me but they never seemed to fill in the bed in the many years they have been there. I decided to try not mowing the canes last fall and leaving some tops to see if that makes a difference in the next couple of years before I rip them out. Michael

I agree with Mrs G! Three weeks ago the Caroline were blooming and I pruned 6" off the tops to force laterals which are now full of blooms. Caroline replaced Heritage for me years ago for flavor as well as vigor and productivity. Carolines are now over five feet tall. All my primocane raspberries (another favorite is Dinkum),are cut down each winter to have only the 'fall' crop. I thin them in the spring to have only 4 plants per square foot with rows being 2 feet wide. I also thin every few weeks to maximize air circulation and production. My goal is to begin red rasp picking in late July as my 40 blueberries take all the picking time until then. Currently, I use certified org horse manure compost, Ca-25, Sea-90, homemade EM and kelp meal to enhance the berries and clay soil. All my berries are maintained organically in full sun. The best tasting and juiciest Heritage I ever ate were raised at the base of a huge black walnut tree in central IL. It is interesting how sister plants can taste different on various soils and or mulches. If you have a close by walnut tree, experiment with a few of your Heritage. IMO, even a 'dryish' red rasp is better than many other treats.

glenn, I am sure they are black raspberries they have a crown shape, I wish they were blackberries I love them more. I'm going to visit my local nursery they were selling blackberry plants last time I was there. The only thing is that our usual frost date is in less than a month and will they have time to take root. I am planning on setting up the trellis as well my raised beds for veggies next week. I have already put up one trellis for Concord grapes. Which I didn't know until after I bought the plants that some sort of Concord type Grape was growing wild in the field behind my house and on some of the fence in the back. Question about trellis I should have it going north to south in my flat yard or east - west. My grapes are going north - south. Oh I just wanted to say I really like this forum already this is my first day on here and my second question I asked and both of them were answered promptly, nicely, and concisely!
