Ideas for plants to put in Barley Straw Planter

My mother just got a Barley Straw Planter to put in her pond, and I'm hunting around for plant ideas to put in it. The hole to put plants/dirt in isn't very wide, about a few inches wide and maybe 5-7 inches deep if my memory serves me right.

Looking at the reviews, the planter seems to have a problem with tipping over, so I might get a plant that trails outward and/or something that can endure being in water. Google has been unhelpful so far with ideas.

Also, with 'tips over' point in mind, should I put something like aquatic dirt instead of regular soil if the plant can use it? The package says 'simply fill hole with any premium potting soil' but I don't exactly trust it.
