New to Heuchera's just planted a new batch

I am usually a Hosta guy, but wanted to add a little color among the Hosta bed so I ordered a few from Casita Azul and planted them yesterday.

I ordered Georgia Peach, Sweet Tea, Cajun Fire, Southern Comfort, Autumn Leaves and Berry Smoothie. Most of them look ok, but a few have droopy stems I suppose from the stress of a different environment.

I planted them in a propriety soil blend I usually reserve for my Hosta which consist of Miracle Grow garden soil, cow manure compost, peat moss, perlite, and composted soil from the ground around my house.

Some of the plants will receive 4-5 hours of sunlight per day while others only dappled sunlight. I tied a couple of the plants stems together with a bread tie so the leaves wouldn't touch the ground and rot. Also, watered them with a little fish emulsion today and gave them a misting of water.

Any recommendations for growing and maintaining would be appreciated.

Hi, actually I don't fuss with my Heuchera. They just grow for me. I do top off dead foliage in the spring. Most only get rain water. You are 2 zones warmer than I am so not sure if my ambivalence ? Lol , would work for you. For me they are trouble free.

Well, after about a week some plants are looking pretty healthy and some aren't. My "Autumn Leaves" has already had three leaves wilt and turn brown.

It was the least healthy of the bunch I ordered, but overall it still looks like it will make it if it can ever get it's bearings in this heat and humidity.

Should I cut-off the dead leaves to strengthen the rest of the plant or just leave them alone ?

@ NYGardener & Bejay - I always start all of my seeds in moist paper towel in a loosely covered plastic sandwich bag on the window sill in my Kitchen. And I always have the best of luck with germination I guess it just gets the perfect amount of sun.This lettuce actually sprouted in 1 day. So after the lettuce seeds sprouted on my window sill I didn't want to go through the slow monotonous task of transplanting then all to other pots so I thought "hey why not make a micro greens garden" So I went looking through my kitchen and came up with this. Once the lettuce (Grand Rapids) had got some good roots i'm going to space them a little better but keep them in there. I know it a lot of seeds for the space but I'm sure it will be fine as I plan on continual harvest. I took off the plastic today because they were growing so fast they actually reached the plastic. Last night they had just popped out and not they are almost an inch tall. Also I do spray the lettuce/ paper towel with mist from a squirt bottle.

I share your excitement, Beth. Very pretty blooms and such healthy looking plants. I get excited everytime mine bloom and have for years. I'm going to be gone for a couple of weeks soon and will miss the first blooms of a couple of my new ones. Dang!!

THanks, everybody! I appreciate all the comments. To answer Aliska, yes these are all from controlled cross polination. I grow several thousand seedlings every year, and although it can be rewarding, it can be very frustrating and it takes a lot of work. My climate isn't the best as far as Dayliles are concerned, and the dogs far outnumber he keepers. Remember -- I'm only showing the better ones and not all the ugly ducklings that won't open properly, or are just, plain ugly.Also, some of the plants that look great the first year DON"T look great the second and visa versa, so it can be a bit maddening at times. As far as seedlings are concerned, yes, they look like blades of grass at first. If you have a ditch lily and want to concentrate on nicer cultivars, I'd suggest digging it up as it can spread aggressively. morning all! I don't post much in the plant forums but I love heucheras! I have no idea how many I have but they are everywhere here! I have been doing my clean up here in Ma. I just break pieces of as I am cleaning up and tuck them in promix, no rooting powder nothing. I leave them in the shade and have dozens of new plants for the swaps every year. RE: covering the long stem of a more mature plant, why?? pull that whole baby out of the soil, pull each little clump apart and plant all the small pieces. I cut that big stem into about 2 inch pieces, stick it in the ground and voila....more plants....lol I end up with soooo many plants that I leave them at the end of my street with a free sign. Good choices from my favorite online nursery for heucheras! Great job in preparing your bed and you've got a really great start. Please post some pictures when you (and your new additions) are ready:)

Among the ones you ordered, I have Georgia Peach, Sweet Tea, Cajun Fire, and Berry Smoothie. They are in general very good and robust growers (not sure about Autumn leaves). They may get some sunburn during the first season if they are exposed to too much sun, particularly you are in a much warmer zone than my zone 5a. If you can, try to put sweet tea, southern comfort and autumn leaves under the dappled light. Canjun Fire and Georgia Peach tolerate sun the best. Similar to hostas, morning sun is more friendly than the afternoon suns.

I agree with Sherry. Heucheras don't need much attention. Just give them some water during the first few weeks, then on hot and dry days, they should be fine.

Here is my 2 Cajun Fire (ordered from Casita Azul ~ 4 years ago). They receive ~ 5 hours afternoon sun. Color does change from spring to summer to fall.

Thanks everyone. After some cooler,wetter, weather the Heuchera seem to be doing better. Even Autumn Leaves seems to be coming around. My Southern Comfort which is in the most shade of any of them has turned a light green. Overall, they seem to grow quickly, as several have put on new growth.

Vivian, the Cajun Fire is the purple one? I never would have expected that color from the name. I need some purples, mine have not worked out. What colors do they change to and from at other seasons?
