Do some of your hostas go heat-dormant during the hot weather? If that is the case I can't see that they would suffer any more...roots might like a cooling bath and fresh media? I know, I know, I'm a zone 5, but still....somehow I don't think it will hurt. :-)

No, I haven't had any go heat dormant and I've had hosta in pots for 20 years or so.

I've had several suffer what I would call, "failure to thrive", though. At some point, they just don't come back.

Do you think/believe some hostas that don't thrive are averse to being grown in a pot? I often read that some particular hosta (no names jump out) or another doesn't like to be potted...wonder if those two may perhaps be among those? I'm off to check Rawson lists for such...

I think some don't like pots and I think some don't like the heat. But, I find lots that tolerate the heat and pots. If you stop and think about it, most hosta are grown in pots. at least initially. Sweet Innocence has done well for Babka.

Olgas don't seem to care for my environment, for instance. I think I'm going to send my Key West away in Hallson's hosta swap.

So far, all of the Lakesides have done well for me. Tony Avent hosta do well for me, too.

I had hoped that Paula would chime in on the repotting question. If she doesn't, I'll email her directly.

I am done for the year. I will neither repot any or purchase any mail order hosta. I have had temps in the 100s already and I also have had NO rain. I have been moving a hose nightly and am thinking of giving them sunscreens as it is going to be real hot here. I usually have a cut off date of July 4th but this year it was June 15. If you are already in doubt it would be best to wait till the end of next winter or next spring, which is not that long away. Sadly we have a long growing season but a short repotting time. Welcome to summer.

If they are not drying out enough they may rot in our heat...I think if they were mine I would risk it...How big are they? The smaller the better I'm thinking.

We had such a beautiful cool spring and I was repotting like crazy.... much later than usual...but then BOOM the heat hit and I haven't finished...The ones I have left to do are really big in big pots and I'm thinking they will just fall over and not recover this season....I may wait till cooler weather in the fall....have done that before and all were fine....

My FQ just seems to stay the same size....and SI died the first season.... they may not like our climate....

Do not repot anymore till next year. You will set them back.

It's been really wet here. At repotting time, it was freezing and snowing and wet. Then it started raining. I didn't get my shade cloth up until June 1 or so. I had so many to repot, I didn't get them all finished. The weatherman says we aren't through with the rain.

I still have a few to repot but for me it got to hot too fast. ( the fact that I may have ordered a few too many has nothing to do with me not getting it done ). Look at your 5 day forecast. See how much heat will be on this week and give repotting them a try. If they are not drying out like they should maybe the holeS in the pots are too small. Both SI and FQ have not done well for me but they have made a comeback. You may have to put the overly wet pots in a covered area for a couple of days to dry out. Texas has had too much rain. Me I am off to turn off the hose. Just a few more thoughts.

It's as humid here in Texas as I can remember for many years. You break a sweat just looking through the window, that is if you can time it right to look outside when it's not raining. Holy Amazon wannabe, Batman!

bk....is this the first year you have had pots that you thought weren't draining properly? I remember you posting something about that not long ago. Is it a new media that you tried that you feel is causing it?

It looks like not much chance of rain for at least a week with highs in the low 90s for us and for you. But how many times have we seen that the last few weeks and it didn't happen. We were originally supposed to be mostly dry this last week and we ended up with 7.5 inches at our house. A couple of days in the low 80s when we would normally be in the mid 90s. It's crazy.

bk.....I don't have SI but out of all of the ones I bought last year FQ has been my poorest performer this year.

We were supposed to be dry yesterday and today and it rained last night and this afternoon. I have water standing in my back yard again. They say Lake Lavon in is in danger of over flowing the damn. If that happens, Wylie is toast.

I've seen slugs that are about 1 1/2" regularly over the years. We don't have that many and I always think my pot feet help with that problem. I moved a brick Friday and found a nest of the ugliest 4" slugs you've ever seen right by my hosta bleachers. So, I put out sluggo plus yesterday. Then more rain.

Do you get any reports on the aquifer? Will all this rain help it recharge?

(Yes, I tried a new potting soil this spring. I've switched back to Miracle Grow and pine bark mulch.)

We have had rain today also that we weren't supposed to have. Only about 6/10 of an inch so far and as still a very light rain right now. It looks like it won't be much more than that (famous last words), but like you, every drop right now is runoff. I saw that a bridge east of Dallas in Hunt county was washed out this afternoon but hadn't heard about the Lavon dam. I'll have to look that up.

I have been checking the aquifer daily. It will likely be more than 671 feet tonight, up from less than 640 and the highest it's been since 2011. We're in pretty good shape right now, no watering day restrictions for the first time in several years. Lake Medina was at 3.2% three months ago and tomorrow will likely be over 70%.

Those sound like some slugs that could wipe out a hosta in a hurry. Wow. I hope they stay away from my yard! I had never seen slugs or snails on any of my hosta before this year. I'm picking small snails off of them daily lately, but have not seen any slugs, although I do have some major damage to a couple that I suspect was a slug so am always on the lookout for them. That happened several weeks ago.

I'm also concerned about the new organic raised bed soil I have been experimenting with this year. It seems to drain pretty well under normal circumstances but with all of this rain you can tell by picking up a pot that it's holding more water than the MG. But no matter, the pots are going to stay wet through this crazy spring unless we move them under cover. I'm just letting mine sit out and will let the strongest survive. Right now everything looks pretty good, minus the major beating some took from the early season bug infestation.
