Reducing Falls in Bathrooms: Custom Made Grab Bars

My Number One client fell in his bathroom not so long ago. He fell stepping out of his super large doorless shower and hurt his ribs pretty bad. It could have been a lot worse and if you look at the photo you can see the sharp edge of the Knee Wall and outside curb corner.

I went over to see what I could come up with and I proposed a custom made grab bar. I had no idea what the grab bar would cost nor how long it would take to install. This condo is new to my client and I did not build the shower for him.

The grab bar took forever to make - I'm not sure why and used a fun little fitting from the dairy industry. The soft corner is a 1 1/4" stainless fitting typically sold to dairy producers and people building food grade plumbing lines for factory and such.

In the end I was billed a whopping $700.00 for this grab bar and the install took less than an hour. I used six screws in total and long plastic wall anchors in ever hole. My calculations for the pitch of the knee wall was out a little or the unit was made out of whack a little. Either way I added few shims to the left lower side and the bar went in perfect.

It is quite strong and now makes entering and exiting the shower much safer.
