Comments (10)It was a 10-minute walk to exit the pier area, as usual there was lots of security and one would need you ship's ID card and a photo ID to return to the ship. Some ports are stricter than others on this. This was a clean and well-organized harbor area and we had no problem with making the trek, for those with some walking difficulties, there was a free shuttle. Gran Canaria is less than 100 miles from the coast of Africa and the weather is temperate. Although it was coolish in the morning, the sun was shining and it was beautiful. It warmed in the afternoon and it was absolutely wonderful! The Hop-On, Hop-Off bus program is in most cities that we visited on this cruise. In Las Palmas, there were 9 stops around the city, including one at the end of the pier. Your ticket would allow you to get on at any stop. Ear buds were provided so that you could hear the on-going recorded narrative. Again, do some research before you leave home and you can decide how you want to spend your day....See MoreA long cruise - Almeria, Spain - part 1
Comments (8)I asked about agriculture in the southeast part of Spain and was told the Almond and Olive trees were the primary fruit trees. Our guide, Debbie, told us that Spain grows more olives than Italy; and that most of the olives are exported to Italy for the making of olive oil. I could not figure out what they didn't just make the olive oil in Spain and push Italy out of the picture. Grapes are also a big crop, but most of the grape growing region is farther north. As we rode along we saw many hectares of farmland such as this completely used for Olive and Almond trees....See MoreA long cruise - Tangier, Morocco - part 1
Comments (13)Jim, I think your better half did an excellent job both on the photos and the information on her trip. Love the doors. Re the narrow street, I've seen several of those in my travels. They were early security systems. As Jim said,. paraphrasing , they were to stop bad guys from entering the buildings. From what I was told on my travels, is that they were built to protect the money centers. mostly cash and gold, from robbers. We went into an old money center. The high windows/peep-holes were meant to allow the people inside to be able to see out but did not allow the people to see in. In one case, I saw steps built into the bottom of the door so people could climb up and see who were outside....See MoreA long cruise - Cadiz, Spain - part 1
Comments (9)The rose from before is part of the rose garden at Maria Luisa Park in Seville. The park is beautiful; it stretches along the Guadalquivir River. The park area was donated to the city of Seville in the late 19th century and was organized in its present set-up in 1911. In 1914, the city began to create a special place for the Ibero-America expo of 1929, which include Maria Luisa Park. Being from the US Midwest, the concept of beautiful blooming roses in November is strange; however, in the southern part of Spain, it is a usual sight....See MoreDelawareDonna Zone 7A
