blooming has begun

I have a few of the early ones, along with a few that are grown in pots starting. It is exciting, tons of scapes and buds all over the garden. I used alfalfa pellets this spring, and perhaps that is why everything looks so good! lots of daylilies are going to bloom that had taken a few years off, so that is a good thing. this is a favorite, Black Fathom Depths. I have it in a pot and in the garden, so the potted one blooms earlier.

Another favorite, Web of Intrigue, always opens fully, rain or sun.

Bowie follows me, rain or shine!!

Lovely Cindy. Web Of Intrigue has started here also but not Black Fathom Depths (in the ground). Your garden bed look immaculate and also a joy to see Bowie.

Managed to get a photo today (yesterday was raining and my flash went off making it go all blurry). Is it my imagination or does this have a faint pink tinge? This is in a shady position which may explain the color but I'm not sure. Maybe in a day or two the anthers will open out to reveal a dark center and the flower will grow bigger and whiter. What do you think? Does a flower only a day or two old look a bit different to the fully formed, mature version? Sure hope this is Henryii, otherwise I have to go back to the nursery and try to get an exchange. Wish I had gone with the other plant now (second-rate leaves or not). At least I would be sure I had the real thing.

If you fertilize, my opinion is to begin when the plants show some new growth. If you are using a liquid like Miracle Grow, I've heard it recommended many times to fertilize 1/2 strenghth instead of full and probably every 2-3 wks during the growing season. Stop when fall arrives, unless it is a plant that grows or blooms in fall/winter like Christmas cactus. If you use slow release fert like osmocote, I would fertilize when growth starts in spring and I would use it again in 3-4 mos (the label tells you how long it lasts, so usually April and July or something like that. If you fertilize with compost, really you can mix that in the potting soil or topdress the plant in spring and maybe once again in growing season. I usually do spring and summer with a slow release or sometimes not, but I find the prices are very high, so I'm making lots of compost. I might try the bone meal though, becoz it can be gotten cheap.

It is really a nice red. I seem to go in phases. I had a few reds in my garden, but most all were the deep, dark reds. Last year I decided I needed some true reds, and if they show off as nicely as yours, I will be delighted. I am glad you have been getting height on yours. I have not noticed a problem here, just on a few. Prickly Sensation was new last spring, 2 fans died in the summer and it did not bloom. It is blooming now on a 6" or so scape. I thought I should cut the scape off, to help the plant conserve energy, but I just had to see it. Beautiful big, perfect bloom. I had a couple of seedlings bloom for the first time, very pretty blooms too, they are short. I hope maturity will correct the height problem.

Cindy - It's so great to see you posting daylily photos again, and I always love a Bowie pic! Black Fathom Depths looks awesome. The dark orange daisies really complement Web of Intrigue, I'm glad to hear you have tons of buds. Most of my bud counts are lower here this year. Keep posting!

Cats rule with me, so glad to see Bowie on patrol protecting your investments (and you too I'm sure)......Really like that Web of Intrigue. Is that a Gerbera daisy peaking out in back? That splash of coral orange really sets off the daylily.........Maryl

well, when I seen you posted,I was hoping to see a picture of that sweet Bowie.I love cats and he is so pretty, hope you include lots of pictures of him with daylilies and anything else you care to include.Web of Intrigue is a beauty, too.so good to see you are posting now and we can see more of yourbeautiufl gardens

Love Black Fathom Depths, such a nice color. Web of Intrigue is nice too, this was its first year in my garden & I am really enjoying it. It has bloomed amazingly well, was the first one to bloom this spring on May 16 & is still blooming. It was a nice clump when I received it, but I never expected it to do this well. Bowie looks like he is doing his daily inspection.
