Did you tip the guys that installed your granite?
Comments (13)No...for one, they did a barely acceptable job...and it was barely acceptable only after I insisted they fix several things (>1" gap b/w wall & counter, uneven slabs seamed together (twice!!!), mis-matched seam color). PLUS, they irreparably damaged a cabinet that held up the project another 4 weeks or so while we waited for the new cabinet! (And don't get me started on the PR!) Bottom line, they didn't earn a tip...plus they charged an arm & a leg anyway... (I was stuck with them) Remember, a tip is something that's earned...it's not a "given". So many people just assume they have to tip regardless of the service they receive that it's become expected...even from those who give you bad service. (Do you tip 18%-20% when you get bad service at a restaurant...I'm not talking about a kitchen mistake or something out of the server's control, I mean just plain bad service from the server him/herself?)...See MoreCabinets installed, need help choosing pulls and granite. Comments (5)Kristine - your cabinets are beautiful!!! I love dark granite also. Most of the pictures I've been looking at have lighter granite with darker cabinets, but I personally think the dark granite looks very nice. I'm doing cream cabinets with a dark island & will have dark granite on both. I'm not sure about fingerprints - I have 3 kids also, so I'm interested in that response. I don't know if 1 1/4" is enough for cup pulls - I think mine are 2" & its going to be tight, but since you have a raised panel it might work. Can't wait to see your finished kitchen pics!...See MoreGranite Cracked/Broken By Granite Guy During Install of Cooktop
Comments (17)Well, to put another opinion in to the mix---I don't know of any granite fabricators in my neck of the woods who will do a cutout on an already existing installed countertop that another fabricator has installed. Yes, you can get them to come out and drill holes, or modify cutouts in place, but there will be NO WARRANTY about the top cracking and you would have to sign a waiver acknowledging that fact. In an existing situation, the house can have settled, the cabinets settled, and there can be invisible stresses on the granite top if that's happened, and then you apply cutting tools to the situation and you have a stress crack manifest itself. Not to mention, your "pinch hitters" didn't help select the slab or layout, and the original fabricator may have installed a piece with a fissure there that just naturally broke when the larger cutout stresses were applied with the bigger and heavier cooktop. There are a lot of reasons granite cracks, but in an existing situation that is being modified, you really can't hold the fabricators responsible. Now, they should have made you aware of this on the front end, had you sign a waiver, and shown you the issue and let you sign off on the repair efforts before they left. I'm not defending that behavior at all....See MoreCan I put granite on top of the kitchen island made of ikea cabinets?
Comments (26)In most production cabinets, the back is nothing more than to close the cabinet box. A hanging rail is what will support and hold the cabinet to the wall. Perfect example is of Joe's picture, where you see the solid wood at the back of the cabinet, that he's screwed to the plywood. That cabinet doesn't have a back, just a hanging rail, and it's obviously not going anywhere. Now, whenever I do an island, I always try to use at least a 1/2" plywood panel across the back of the cabinets, then a finish panel or wainscoting. I don't do a whole lot of frameless cabinets, but I do the same on them. This adds to the rigidity of the cabinet boxes, as well as giving the finish panel something to nail onto, anywhere I want to attach it. Plus, people won't put their foot through the panel. It also makes it easy to attach corbels. If you have the room, build a knee wall behind the cabinets. Now you can attach the cabinets to a wall. Then either drywall and paint, or use finish panels to cover the knee wall....See Morestephanj
