How often do you have to 'lift' entire beds of plants?
Comments (9)I have one raised bed that sank more than most, probably because it had a lot of citrus in it originally, and as they rotted it collapsed a bit. There is a flowering plant I put in it 2 years ago, a friend gave it to me, I think it might be dianthus. Anyway, it was a big blooming mat last year and the year before. Since everything had sunk so far down I put lots of OM into the bed last fall to build it back up. Most things grew through the OM, this stuff is just drowning and I can see it was a mistake to put stuff on top of it. I thought it would grow through it, it didn't. Oops. So in that case, I should have lifted the plant so that I could get the soil level back to the top of the bed. I sort of tugged and lifted with a shovel the huge, won't come apart clump of giant irises, and stuck compost underneath it from different sides. That worked pretty well. I knew not to bury irises. So for perennials in sinking raised beds, lifting them once in a while might help. Somehow the rhubarb didn't have any problem, not sure why. As for nature not having to lift its plants, note that nature does not build a foot tall raised bed and fill it with layers of rotting stuff all in one fell swoop. It does everything more gradually, so it doesn't have this trouble. Marcia...See MoreHow often do you grocery shop? How many places do you go?
Comments (29)I shop at multiple stores. Pay day is every other Friday so I that is when I go to Wal-Mart or Smith's (Kroger owned). Every 2 weeks we also get coffee beans at the little mom and pop shop. We go to Sprouts every 2 weeks as their ads overlap on Wednesdays. This is actually getting less frequent as they have not put the bulk things on sale that I want the most as frequently (steel cut oats and short grain brown rice). The bread outlet is a once a month trip. Other stores such as Keller's (for meat), Trader Joe's, the international markets, Vitamin Cottage (for other bulk items), I alternate months. Some things I get through Amazon's subscribe and save and that can vary in frequency. Eggs are mostly from my hens and many of our vegetables come from our garden. Some of the variety in shopping is about the money savings but it is more along the lines of trying to match the quality to a certain price point and meeting my needs of acquiring a diversity of ingredients. Arborio rice at TJ's, quality meat at Keller's, red lentils in bulk at Vitamin Cottage, etc. Part of it is me trying to maintain a well stocked pantry because my moods are fickle and if the pantry has a variety of things, I can cook according to my mood. Pre-planned menus never, ever work for me....See MoreHow often do you use varied wash cycles?
Comments (8)Excellent question. With my old Frigidaire Gallery FL which finally bit the dust two weeks ago, it was very rare I used anything except the "normal" (cotton) cycle; jackets usually were washed on "delicate". The vast majority of my clothes are cotton, anyway... But now that I have a Miele W4842 with beaucoup choices, I strongly suspect I will use them fairly consistently to match the wash loads. I normally cringe at even the thought of allowing the machine to micromanage various wash loads, but the Miele is unquestionably well-programmed as my observations told me. I often think that one's usage of other wash cycles is rather dependent on how well the other cycles match the user's expectations. But that's just my opinion....See MoreHow often do you use your airbath or does the novelty wear off??
Comments (24)I renovated my bathroom a year ago and went through this decision. I went to a showroom that had an airtub on the floor to test. I think if you wore a bathing suit, they would let you get in -- I didn't. As soon as I heard the noise from the motor I knew it wouldn't work for me. It would have shaken my small house off its foundation. I went with a deep wide soaking tub called a Kohler Expanse. It's fine. I prefer showers. I love my hand held shower head and can adjust it to pound on sore muscles. Maybe twice a year I wish I had a jetted (not air) tub. If I have pulled a muscle or my back is aching a good hot pounding would feel wonderful. An air tub is more like sitting in a glass of champagne -- it bubbles, it doesn't massage sore muscles. I think a hot tub would be fun. Here is a link that might be useful: kohler expanse tub...See MoreTxMarti
