New Marvin with my old leaded glass sashes?
Comments (3)llewellynh: Can you point us to a specific website or forum or anywhere that talks about these problems? I would love to know if there are indeed problems. We have five-year-old Marvin and so far, they are working just fine. There are three banks that face our winter storms every year and they are holding up in perfect shape. I would want to be more careful in my inspection if there are some known problems. Do you know if it is installation failure that caused the rot? Or is it actual wood rot? Any links and specific info will be appreciated....See MoreMarvin Windows vs Hurd/Sierra Pacific Windows - which is better?
Comments (75)Moisture between the glass would not be caused by poor installation. Rather, it would be caused by a defective manufacturing issue or due to some type of unusual situation where the normal wear was affected. For instance, extreme variations in temperature due to orientation or something going on regarding the interior of your home. I design and specify windows for homes in Florida almost all of them on the water or close by. Sierra Pacific offers a 30 year warranty on its 2605 finish and 20 year warranty on its patented Coreguard wood treatment and I would consider those windows. Andersen performs well too but they reduce their 20 year warranty to 10 years when on the coast. In my 40 year career, I have had great success with Andersen and SP and would run away from Pella if you are looking for an aluminum clad wood window. Just my opinion based on more than a hundred installations....See MoreMarvin Windows: reasonable competitor for wood windows?
Comments (13)Some follow up, if anyone is interested. I talked to the Kolbe dealer again. He said their prices are close to Marvin's and not to choose Kolbe for price. A bigger difference might be the dealer mark-up than the product itself. That dealer is a 45 min away and unknown to my contractor. There are also mixed reviews on yelp. My contractor is getting bids for Marvin from two local stores that are reliable. The one I met with yesterday was great (and came recommended by my architect and interior designer). Fun fact: since Marvin makes all windows to order, there isn't really an up-charge for a "custom" size. (I'm trying to match the windows in the front of my 1940s bungalow and some the dimensions are non-standard ). The Marvin book calls out sizes in 6" increments, but they can make windows to any spec, to 1/8"....See MoreWhich Vinyl windows- Milgard, Pella, Marvin, Simonton, Anlin
Comments (7)I would totally stay away from Milgard. We used them for one side of the house to see if we wanted to complete the rest of the house with them. The casement windows don’t close correctly after only a few months and the installation was very sloppy- terrible caulking and huge cracks in my stucco where they weren’t careful taking the old windows out(!) The sales rep for Milgard and the window company (Pelican) were no help. They came out and made a bunch of promises but nothing ever got fixed. We live in Southern California. I decided to maybe try another company that sold Milgard. If you look at Milgard’s main site on yelp out of Temecula they have only a three star review on average! Everyone is complaining ….whole houses of windows are failing and Milgard is not getting back to them. We are looking at Anlin for the rest of the house now. The company I am looking at has great reviews. Does anyone have experience with Anlin?...See MoreHeights Historic Window and Door LLC
