Comments (4)I used a tumbler for two years and it tended to clump up. A number of factor may cause it: 1) too much moisture 2) not turning it often enough 3) materials not shredded or reduced to small enough size I mixed the materials before putting them in the tumbler and that helped a bit. The center bar rusted thru after four years, but by then I had switched to mesh bins piles....See MoreMy very first wheelbarrow full of homemade compost!
Comments (7)It looks beautiful and congratulations on your first successful batch! I know you're excited and proud and you should be. Composting sounds harder than it is. While there are lots of techniques a gardener can employ to make compost more quickly, I tend to do it the old-fashioned way. I just pile stuff up and wait for it to break down. I only turn it over in winter when I am sure there won't be any snakes in it, and I pull out and use all the finished or almost-finished compost in February and/or March and then start the whole process of piling stuff up all over again. Your plants are going to love growing in your home-made compost. There is something very satisfying about composting and returning the compost to the soil. I like that there is very little waste involved. I hate seeing people pile up compostable materials on the curb for the sanitation workers to pick up and haul away when instead they could be composting that material and returning it to the soil from whence it came in the first place. Composting is addictive. It is just so satisfying to be able to improve your soil with compost from materials gathered right there. I have a lot of big compost piles because one is not enough....See MoreMy first compost bin!
Comments (5)Oh how I miss my compost container! Mine is roundish, and gets rolled around daily, when I have it. Presently it lives at my daughters, besides her house. But, yesterday I opened it, to see, if any of my worms are still alive. When I had to move out of my house, I put my outdoor worm bin worms in there, with all the vermicompost that was there. Surprise, surprise, surprise.... the worms didn't cook yet. I shoveled to kitty litter buckets full in buckets, and brought them home on my balcony. No longer do I need to haul my compostables to my friend (but of course, she will miss all that) but I can compost right here now. Yeah! Stop by Starbucks when ever you get near one, and get their bags of used coffee grounds. Great stuff to add to your bin. And it is FREE! Moni...See More- 8 years ago
