Thanks bboy (sorry but for some reason I didn't get the response via my email and just found your data). I looked this up but the missing section (and somewhat heart shape rather than just round) makes me think it's something else. I keep looking at water lily leaves to no avail. Someone gave me this thing so I've been curious ever since. Any other ideas? Even other categories to look under? I've googled images for "large tropical leaf" and "water lily leaf," "lotus leaf" etc...

The reason, as you know, that we don’t give common names is exactly for plants like this. The common names for this plant are “porcelain flower” or “wax plant”, neither of which will provide any sort of information when you google the names. If you are hoping to find information about growing the plant then always look it up by the scientific name. If you happen to stumble upon the common name in the process, so be it; however, it should not influence your search.

welcome to the forums ... it often helps to add big city name ... z5 alone is almost half the US ... and sometimes location helps ... they speak of the wild species ... you see the tall wild kin of these lining the roadways of MI in fall .... though not for the small garden.. they can make quite a statement en masse .... ken

My first thought was tall Garden phlox as well. I have to go out and look at my obedient plant. I thought the leaves had more of a serrated edge and squarish stem.
