Need Deer Resistant Plants/ seed
Comments (1)They eat my supposedly "deer resistant" plants too. I guess the MD deer don't have discriminating palates. lol Of course they still like my rare and or expensive plants best....See MoreBig leaves; full sun; deer resistant plant?
Comments (16)Cameron, I started the Inula from seeds obtained from Gardens North a few years ago. If you want a few seeds, just send me an e-mail. I did get a new one this year from a private garden centre. The leaves are spectacular on that one as well - more ridging, leaves much wider, but not as long - and I am waiting to see how it performs next year. So far so good. Newbie in NJ, Yep! I just think it's a nice plant in the gardens. It gives architectural structure, foliage is resistant to disease and pests and retains it's beauty for the growing season, great for late season pollinators, etc. :O) It also won't fall in the many winds we have here due to tropical storms coming up the coast. Oh yes, PV is growing it on her balcony. LOL! The shrub in the front is a variegated Forsythia known as Fiesta. The stems are a maroon red and it grows slowly. Mine has never flowered, but I grow it for the foliage....See MoreSun-tolerant and deer-free sugestions?
Comments (4)Iris,jonquils are great. Deer won't touch them. Cleomes are great. Mint, gaillardia. russian sage, coneflowers, all the grasses. So far, they have never touched my crepe myrtle or japanese maple and they've eaten everything else around it. Zinnias are fine. Cosmos. Lambs ears. Vinca major and minor, but be careful it is invasive, the same with ageratum....See Morelooking for gallery (pics) of deer resistant flowers
Comments (3)Warning--I have ordered from this source and been very disappointed. VERY, very small amounts in the packets, and very low germination rate, well below what you would get from a larger commercial source. Also, Mocknbird, you should accept the fact that deer will eat absolutely anything if hungry enough. Also, be aware that deer in different areas will eat different plants. There is no such thing as a "deerproof" plant. I have been gardening with deer here for about 10 years. Here are a few that have been untouched in my garden: Dicentra (Bleeding Heart) Iris Chrysanthemums Daisy (Chrisanthemum spps.) Hyssop Nepeta (Catmint) Flax Mock Orange (Philadelphus spp) Daffodils Oenothera (evening primrose) Black-eyed susan (rudbeckia spp.) Butterfly bush Lavender of any kind Russian Sage (periskova) most ornamental grasses SOME (but not all) hardy geranium Stachys most ferns Most herbs are safe. Instead of annuals, I often fill in with annual herbs--thai basil is particularly attractive, so is basil "purple ruffles". One ferny herb that's good is Stevia, but there are no flowers to speak of. Hope this helps some!...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
