'Climbing Chrysler Imperial'

Oh, nothing to say about 'Climbing Chrysler Imperial' other than it--with its fragrance--has always been my standard for a red rose. I came home this evening to find this blossom open, and that area of the yard redolent with its perfume.

Just as I got out my camera, we started getting some drops of rain (!), so the pic was taken in haste. My only message is: Hurrah for 'Climbing Chrysler Imperial'!

Gorgeous! The bush form is my favorite red rose. It's perfume and repeat cannot be bested. Plus it loves hot weather and gets plenty of it here in Central Florida. I have never seen the climbing form. How does it perform for you?

I have to add my vote in for Dublin Bay. While it is thorny and not so fragrant (mine has a little), I love its abundance of bloom and its color. The red stays red. It doesn't fade to the magenta/purplish color that a lot of reds do. I also find that the blooms last a while on the bush. It does repeat well and for me was not a slow starter. Mine is in full sun all day long (so east, south, west exposures in a hot-summer climate). It is a very stiff caned climber. I also have Quadra which has pretty blooms but not as many as Dublin Bay and it is the slower starter for me. It is a nice rose too. I don't know if I should mention Ramblin' Red since mine died last summer. While it was alive it was a great rose and was starting to ramble. I think its demise was due to not enough water from me during our hot summer. Our automatic sprinkler system is not operational now so everything relies on me to give it the water it needs. Poor Ramblin' Red would probably still be with me if I hadn't messed up. Annabeth

Ok, Thank You all for helping me. I just went ot help me find to check out Climbing CI only to realize I have an impostor! I think... I tried to take a picture of this octopus like rose. I have over 200 roses and this rose is not a good example but I like it because it is covered with blooms. Right now it is fading away, kind of like a red Persian Yellow complete with black spot. But when she starts to bloom she looks like a chandelier and the blooms are full and deep red. According to all you have told me this is not how CI should look. Any suggestion on which rose this is???

I agree Diane. It is a pretty amazing rose bush to survive on so much neglect and absolutely no supplemental water for so long (my hubby's parents used to care for it, but fell ill for many years and it wasn't a priority), to handle a crazy transplant in the heat of summer here, and still be putting out huge blooms just a few months later! I think it will end up being just fine. The idea of RMV doesn't really bother me too much. Its funny abut my nails. I do them myself while I'm reading or listening to a video lecture. It's a gel that cures by UV light and lasts about 2 weeks. I usually just stick with the same few colors... burgundy, red or lavender. And I wear latex or vinyl gloves in the garden, usually under other thicker gloves like gauntlet gloves. I like to have pretty nails and pretty flowers. :-)

Cori Ann, what a classic bouquet, and the first thing I thought was "Christmas"! This nosegay would be so perfect for Christmas. I suppose CI won't be blooming for you at that time-sigh. You have really introduced me to this rose, and I was tempted to buy it when I discovered Chrysler Imperial was being sold by Edwards. A rose has to have some outstanding qualities to endure so long, and still be sold by a top nursery. I wish I knew anything about Carpet roses, but they certainly add to your bouquet, Cori Ann. Since 'Climbing Chrysler Imperial' was pretty ubiquitous at nurseries from the late 1950s into the early 1980s, I was shocked when I tried to get my hands on one in the later 1980s, and found it impossible. At length, quite some time later, Vintage Gardens came to my rescue and offered one or two or three specimens, of which I quickly swooped in on one. My present one is still a young specimen, just getting its feet on the ground and figuring out what life is all about, so isn't really a good indicator of anything yet. The previous ones I had experience with, back in the 1960s and 1970s, formed sturdy, stiff, handsome specimens, studded with these wonderful blossoms evenly set all over the plant, each flower like all the others. As an experiment, I'm growing this current one as a free-standing bush, like a tall HP. In the past, I've likened the display of the unfurling blooms at the Spring flush to the "Kingdom of the Shades" sequence in the ballet La Bayadere; and I'm sticking with that comparison: It's just numbingly beautiful.
