Violetes Native or Not?

I went to a Native Plant sale and purchased two kinds of violets.
A small "Labrador violet" (Viola labradorica...pictured below) and Viola sororia "speckled". These would go under two pine trees...one in full shade, the other in almost full sun (since two trees were close together and one died, creating a hole). Also, I purchased a smooth aster (Aster laevis) I'm debating planting on an embankment

My questions:
1.) Are they native?
2.) If not, would it be environmentally responsible to plant them outside?

Depends on where you are I suppose, but I think you could make the case that all of these are native:

Sounds like the V. sororia is a cultivar -- there's a fair amount of debate on this forum about whether you can call that truly native. My thinking has loosened up some on that, I worry about it less than I used to.

I'm in New England. I just read online a lot of plants sold in the U.S. As Labrador violet are really a European violet. I'm not a native purist...I just like to give natives "first dibs" and avoid non-natives likely to be aggressive. Totally ok with a cultivar, less sure about hybrids.

Viola odorata is common in lawns and spreads by runners. The flowers can be white or purple. It is pretty easy to ID by the distinctive hooked stigma. If the stigma is straight it is another species.

I just came back from a walk at Demarest Llyod State Park, (a wooded area near the ocean) and saw the cutest little violet, but can't identify it. It's leaves were longer than wide, was tiny, maybe 2"X2" , had dark purple flowers, and was growing at the edge of the road, under deciduous trees. I tried Googling it, and the one it looked most like was the New England Violet, but the range map did not include MA. Also, I saw a maroon-leaved flower with small pink buds, facing down like a bell, the opened flower was white, and faced up. The leaves reminded me of columbine leaves. Over-all, I'd say the plants were about a foot wide, and 8" high. Any ideas?

Shuffling Some Natives

I've been itching to do some transplanting/shuffling, but it was too dry 'round these parts. Thankfully we got some some rain recently - a perfect time to do this sorta thing. My major volunteers - virginia knotweed (Polygonum virginianum), viola (love the wood violets), deer tongue Grass (Panicum clandestinum) and enchanters nightshade (Circaea lutetiana (Circaea quadrisulcata) transplant very easily - especially when small in spring time. I'll also be transplanting my asters (Eurybia divaricata (Aster divaricatus) as well. Some echinacea were transplanted to another location, as was some lobelia cardinalis. I'm waiting to see if any of the other plantings from the last few years (ironweed, joe pye, butterfly weed) have multiplied so I can bring those to other parts of the garden. Last year I moved some solomons seal and that is doing splendidly in it's new location. I'm not always gentle with plants - those that require special treatment (anything other than watering until established) seldom work for me. I'm not very good with seed either. shuffling is one of my favorite things to do. especially after (or during) a nice rain.

Nothing surprising living in France: really common, 66 millions do ;oP Well, beware photos on the web many have wrong names, sometimes it's definitively anything :-( Do you know how capsules look like, the color of the seeds (black, brown, yellow ?) ? Do you have a better pic of the bloom so as to see pistil ? Is that violet native ?

Do you know the source of the plants? I try to buy as much as possible from nurseries that specialize in natives, and who source from local lands.

I suppose you could leave the Labrador violet potted until it reaches a point (flowering, etc.) where you can make a more positive identification. Here in Missouri we have a local Facebook group for native plants that includes a number of botanists and other plant ID experts, so it's been fairly easy for me to get help with identification. Maybe there's something similar for New England?
